Introduction

Mangrove waters in Lubuk Kertang Village, Langkat Regency, North Sumatra Province, have been the subject of research on the diversity of phytoplankton. This study aimed to identify the diversity of phytoplankton types and analyze its relationship with physical parameters and water chemistry in mangrove waters. The study was conducted in March to April 2021, with a focus on the mangrove ecosystem located close to the settlement and oil palm plantations.

Study Area and Methodology

The study was conducted at three selected observation stations by the Purposive Sampling method. Phytoplankton samples were taken using a 45 m plankton net at a depth of 0 m and 3 m. The study area was chosen due to its unique location, with mangrove waters surrounded by settlements and oil palm plantations. This proximity to human activities may have an impact on the diversity and abundance of phytoplankton in the area.

Phytoplankton Diversity

The results of the study showed the discovery of 12 species of phytoplankton, namely: Cymbella sp, Fragillaria sp, Melosira Sulcate, Topinoe SP, Gonatozygon sp, Oedogonium sp, Pandorina Morum, Staurastrum sp, Euglena acus, Euglena viridis, Phacus Longicauda, and Tintinopsisisis. This diversity of phytoplankton is a crucial indicator of the health and quality of the mangrove waters.

High Abundance of Phytoplankton

The total abundance of phytoplankton in Mangrove waters in Lubuk Kertang Village is classified as very diverse. The following details were recorded at each of the three observation stations:

*** Station I: ** Depth of 0 m recorded 4302 ind/l with 12 species, while a depth of 3 m recorded 1483 ind/l with 7 species. *** Station II: ** Depth 0 m recorded 4843 ind/l with 12 species, while a depth of 3 m recorded 2181 ind/l with 9 species. *** Station III: ** Depth of 0 m recorded 3712 ind/l with 12 species, while a depth of 3 m recorded 2113 ind/l with 9 species.

Relationship of Abundance with Physical and Chemical Parameters

Analysis of PCA (Principal Component Analysis) shows that the relationship between the abundance of phytoplankton and physical parameters and water chemistry varies based on the depth and location of the study. This suggests that the abundance of phytoplankton is influenced by a combination of physical and chemical factors, including water temperature, salinity, and nutrient levels.

Further Analysis

This study shows that the mangrove waters of Lubuk Kertang Village have high phytoplankton diversity. This result is important because phytoplankton is the main producer in the aquatic ecosystem. The existence of various phytoplankton shows good quality of waters and supports the existence of other marine life.
