The skin plays a vital role in protecting the human body from external disorders. However, fishermen are groups that are vulnerable to health problems, especially skin diseases. This study aims to describe the condition of the hygiene and sanitation of the fishermen's housing environment in Rugemuk Village, Pantai Labu District, Deli Serdang Regency in 2017, as well as the characteristics of fishermen who experience complaints of skin diseases.

The physical sanitation conditions of their homes also do not meet health standards, which can be a risk factor for skin health. Of the total respondents, 87% reported complaints of skin diseases, and 53% of them experienced itching.

Characteristics of Fishermen with Skin Diseases

It is essential to note that environmental conditions and poor personal hygiene contribute to the high number of complaints of skin diseases among fishermen. With low education status, access to health information and good hygiene practices may be limited. Therefore, efforts are needed to increase awareness of the importance of maintaining personal and environmental hygiene.

Recommendations

In order to overcome this problem, it is expected that there will be counseling about hygiene and sanitation from the local health. In addition, fishermen are also advised to immediately seek treatment at the Puskesmas if they experience health complaints, especially related to skin diseases. This effort is expected to reduce the number of complaints of skin diseases and improve the quality of life of fishermen in Rugemuk Village. With the improvement of hygiene and sanitation conditions, fishermen are expected to be able to maintain their health and increase their productivity in carrying out the profession as fishermen.
