Introduction

In recent years, the importance of nutrition has become increasingly recognized as a crucial factor in maintaining good health, particularly for individuals suffering from chronic diseases such as diabetes mellitus. The concept of Kadarzi, or nutrition aware family, has emerged as a vital approach to promoting healthy eating habits and lifestyles within families. This study aims to explore the behavior of the Javanese community in East II Hamlet of Tanjung Gusta Village, who have family members with diabetes mellitus, and examine the impact of Kadarzi on their health and well-being.

Background

Diabetes mellitus is a chronic disease that affects millions of people worldwide, with a significant proportion of cases occurring in Indonesia. The disease is characterized by high blood sugar levels, which can lead to serious complications if left untreated or poorly managed. Nutrition plays a critical role in the management of diabetes, as a balanced diet can help regulate blood sugar levels and prevent complications. However, many families in Indonesia lack the knowledge and understanding of the importance of nutrition in managing diabetes.

Methodology

This study employed a descriptive research design, involving 70 respondents from families with members suffering from diabetes mellitus. The study was conducted from September 2019 to June 2020, using a questionnaire consisting of 15 questions about knowledge, 12 questions about attitudes, and 13 statements related to family nutritional actions. The questionnaire was designed to assess the respondents' level of knowledge, attitudes, and actions related to nutrition and Kadarzi.

Results

The results of this study showed that the majority of families (82.9%) had a good level of knowledge about nutrition, while 17.1% had sufficient knowledge. In terms of attitude, most families (97.1%) showed a positive attitude towards the behavior of Kadarzi, while 2.9% had sufficient attitudes. Actions related to nutrition also showed positive results, with 81.4% of families carrying out good actions and 18.6% taking sufficient actions.

Discussion

The results of this study suggest that knowledge, attitudes, and family actions greatly affect the application of Kadarzi in everyday life. Good knowledge will help families make the right decisions related to eating patterns and healthcare for family members suffering from diabetes. A positive attitude towards nutrition will also motivate the family to be more active in maintaining health through the selection of appropriate food and the application of a healthy lifestyle.

The importance of this research lies not only in data collection but also in the application of Kadarzi in everyday life. Families who realize the importance of nutrition have more ability to recognize, prevent, and overcome nutritional problems. With the application of a healthy and nutritious diet, it is expected to prevent serious complications that often occur in people with diabetes mellitus.

Conclusion

The results of this study provide valuable insights into the behavior of the Javanese community in East II Hamlet of Tanjung Gusta Village, who have family members with diabetes mellitus. The study highlights the importance of Kadarzi in promoting healthy eating habits and lifestyles within families. The findings of this study can serve as a reference for related parties, including health workers and the local government, to conduct education and socialization about Kadarzi. This is crucial in improving the quality of life of people with diabetes mellitus and preventing various other diseases that have the potential to arise due to lack of understanding of the importance of balanced nutrition in the family.
