Abstract:

The increasing population of the elderly in Indonesia is a significant issue that requires attention. The Central Statistics Agency (BPS) noted that the 21st century has become an elderly century for the Indonesian people, and according to the World Health Organization (WHO), in 2025, it is estimated that the elderly population in Indonesia will increase by 41.4%. This will place Indonesia as one of the countries with the most elderly in the world, occupying fourth position after China, India, and the United States. In 2013, the number of elderly in Indonesia had reached around 24 million, which was equivalent to nearly 10% of the total population. This increase occurs an average of 450,000 people per year. In North Sumatra, the number of elderly reached 2,971,004 people or 9.34% of the total population (Dinsos, 2013). One of the areas that also experienced an increase in the number of elderly people was Siti Rejo Village, Medan Amplas District.

The Importance of Personal Hygiene in the Elderly

Personal hygiene is an essential aspect of maintaining overall health and well-being, especially in the elderly. The World Health Organization (WHO) defines personal hygiene as "the practice of keeping oneself clean and free from dirt, germs, and other contaminants" (WHO, 2020). Personal hygiene is crucial for preventing diseases and maintaining physical and mental health. In the elderly, impaired fulfillment of personal hygiene can lead to various health problems, such as skin infections, body odor, and other health issues.

The Problem of Personal Hygiene in Ny.P

Ny.P, a resident of Siti Rejo II Village, Medan Amplas District, experiences difficulties in maintaining personal hygiene due to various factors, including mobility issues and lack of awareness about the importance of personal hygiene. This can lead to a range of health problems, including skin infections, body odor, and other health issues. Therefore, it is essential to provide appropriate and directed nursing care to support Ny.P in meeting their basic needs.

Nursing Care Strategy

Nursing care conducted on Ny.P in the X environment must be individualized and take into account the physical and psychological condition of the patient. Some strategies that can be applied include:

  1. Health Education: Provide information about the importance of personal hygiene and how to do it correctly. This can be done through verbal and written instructions, as well as demonstrations and practice sessions.
  2. Assistance: Helping the elderly in self-care, such as bathing, foot care, hands, and nails. This can be done by providing physical support and assistance with daily activities.
  3. Programmed Activities: Plan a routine schedule for personal hygiene care so that the elderly easier to carry out these habits. This can include setting reminders, creating a routine, and providing support and encouragement.
  4. Creating a Clean and Comfortable Environment: Ensuring the environment around the elderly is clean and supports personal hygiene activities. This can include cleaning and disinfecting the living area, providing access to clean water and soap, and ensuring that the elderly have a comfortable and safe place to perform personal hygiene activities.

Conclusion

Personal hygiene in the elderly, especially Ny.P, is a critical aspect of maintaining overall health and well-being. Through proper nursing care, it is expected to help meet their basic needs and reduce the risk of health problems. Increasing awareness of the importance of personal hygiene in the elderly is not only the task of health workers, but also involves families and society as a whole. Thus, it is hoped that the elderly can enjoy life with better quality and avoid various diseases that may arise due to lack of self-care.
