Introduction
The traditional ceremony of the coastal tribal marriage in the city of Sibolga is a rich cultural heritage that has been passed down through generations. One of the most significant aspects of this ceremony is the tradition of Dampeng, a folk song that serves as a means of giving advice to the bride and groom. This song is sung in a capella, without the accompaniment of musical instruments, with a responsible style or call and reply. The city of Sibolga is a coastal city in Indonesia that is known for its rich cultural heritage. The traditional ceremony of the coastal tribal marriage is a significant aspect of this heritage, and Dampeng is an integral part of this ceremony. Dampeng is a folk song that is sung by a group of men, consisting of 7 to 12 people, with the division of two groups of singers namely Solo Leader and Choir. This song is sung in a capella, without the accompaniment of musical instruments, with a responsible style or call and reply.
Methodology
This study uses a qualitative research method, through processes such as literature studies, observation, interviews, recording or documentation, transcription, and laboratory analysis. The main focus of this study is the opinion of informants in the context of Emik study, but also supported by interpretation based on scientific principles in the context of ethical studies. Two theories are used in this study, semiotic to analyze the text from Dampeng, and the weighted scale to analyze the melody.
Results
The results of this study showed two main findings. First, the text is sung by the singer in the coastal language spontaneously, using the form of rhymes consisting of content (alloy) and sampiran (two initial lines). Generally, this text contains advice for newly married couples. Second, the structure of the Dampeng melody is classified into a strophic form that has the same or almost the same melody, but with a new or different text, so it is referred to as logogenic strophic. The melody scale used is a heptatonic scale (seven notes) with two types of intervals. The rhythm used in Dampeng is isometric, with the same four units.
Discussion
The results of this study show that Dampeng not only functions as entertainment in the ceremony, but also as a means of delivering moral messages and advice to the bride and groom.
