MOTIF MOTIFS AND COMPARATION OF SOCIAL MEDIA NEEDS (Quantitative Descriptive Study The Motive For The Use And Satisfaction Of Snapchat Social Media Needs Among Communication Science Students In Class 2013 And 2014 FISIP USU)
Motifs in the use and satisfaction of social media needs: A case study of Snapchat among USU Communication Science students
In today's digital age, social media has become an integral part of our lives, with billions of people around the world using various platforms to connect, share, and access information. Among the many social media platforms available, Snapchat has emerged as a popular choice among the younger generation, particularly students. This study aims to explore the reasons behind the use of Snapchat among communication science students at the University of Sumatera Utara (USU) in 2013 and 2014, as well as to assess their level of activity in using this platform and the extent to which their needs are satisfied through their use.
Research purposes
This study has three main objectives:
- Understanding the motive for using Snapchat: This research wants to identify the reasons that encourage students to use Snapchat, whether to find information, communicate with friends, or other goals.
- Evaluating the active level of Snapchat use: This research also seeks to evaluate how often students use Snapchat and in what context they are the most active.
- Assessing the satisfaction of social media needs: This research aims to assess the extent to which students' needs are satisfied through their use of Snapchat.
Methodology
The method used in this study is a quantitative descriptive approach, which involves 60 students as a population. Because the population is under 100 people, the sampling technique applied is total sampling. Data obtained through literature studies and field research. The data analysis technique used is a single table analysis, which aims to provide a simple but clear picture of the research results.
Research results
Based on the results of the study, the motive for the use of Snapchat among students is more dominated by information needs and personal relations. Data shows that many Snapchat users use this platform to find the latest information and establish communication with their friends. This confirms that Snapchat is not only a social media platform, but also as a source of relevant information for students.
In terms of satisfying needs, respondents feel that Snapchat is able to meet the needs of their information and social integration. They expressed satisfaction when using Snapchat to interact and share content, which strengthens their social relationships.
Analysis and discussion
From the results of this study, it appears that social media has an important role in the lives of students today. Especially for communication science students, who are required to always be updated with the latest information and trends, Snapchat offers the right platform to meet these needs. The use of Snapchat which is more focused on information and personal relationships can be explained through the theory of Uses and Gratification, which states that individuals use media with the aim of meeting certain needs.
Satisfaction felt by Snapchat users in terms of information and social interaction shows that this platform has succeeded in creating an effective space for students to connect and exchange information. This also shows the relevance of Snapchat as one of the social media that is widely used among the younger generation, especially students.
Conclusion
This research provides an important insight into the motive for the use and satisfaction of social media needs among communication science students. Snapchat appears as a tool that not only provides information but also helps in building and maintaining social relations. Thus, for researchers and practitioners in the field of communication, the results of this study can be a reference in understanding the pattern of use of social media among the young generation today.
Implications of the study
The findings of this study have several implications for researchers and practitioners in the field of communication. Firstly, the study highlights the importance of social media in the lives of students, particularly in terms of information seeking and social interaction. Secondly, the study suggests that Snapchat is a relevant platform for students to connect and exchange information, and that it has succeeded in creating an effective space for students to do so. Finally, the study provides a reference for researchers and practitioners in understanding the pattern of use of social media among the young generation today.
Limitations of the study
This study has several limitations that need to be acknowledged. Firstly, the study only focuses on communication science students at USU, and therefore the findings may not be generalizable to other populations. Secondly, the study only uses a quantitative descriptive approach, and therefore the findings may not provide a comprehensive understanding of the complex issues surrounding social media use. Finally, the study only examines the use of Snapchat among students, and therefore the findings may not be applicable to other social media platforms.
Future research directions
This study provides several directions for future research. Firstly, future studies can examine the use of social media among other populations, such as non-students or students from different disciplines. Secondly, future studies can use a more comprehensive approach, such as a mixed-methods approach, to provide a more nuanced understanding of the complex issues surrounding social media use. Finally, future studies can examine the use of other social media platforms, such as Instagram or Facebook, to provide a more comprehensive understanding of the pattern of use of social media among the young generation today.
