Introduction

Research conducted by Silvy Vionita in 2020 entitled "Morphological Identification and Characterization of Coffee Plants (Coffea sp.) In Karo Regency", guided by Dr. Ir. Emmy Harso Kardhinata, M.Sc and Ir. Revandy I.M. Damanik M.Sc., M.Sc., Ph.D, revealed the importance of coffee plants as one of the plantation commodities that have high economic value. Coffee plants not only contribute as a source of foreign exchange, but also become part of the culture and life of the people in the coffee producing regions. Karo Regency, located in North Sumatra, is known as one of the significant coffee production centers. The region's rich soil and favorable climate make it an ideal place for coffee cultivation, and the local community has been relying on coffee as a primary source of income for generations.

The Importance of Morphological Characterization

Morphological characterization of coffee plants is very important for several reasons. Firstly, by understanding the physical and morphological characteristics of coffee plants, farmers and researchers can select better varieties, increase productivity, and produce high-quality coffee. This is because the physical characteristics of coffee plants, such as leaf shape, flower color, and fruit size, can affect the quality and yield of the coffee beans. Secondly, the identification of diverse coffee accessions can also help in the genetic conservation program of coffee plants, which is important to maintain biodiversity and reduce the risk of vulnerability to disease and climate change. By preserving the genetic diversity of coffee plants, researchers can develop new varieties that are more resistant to diseases and can thrive in different environmental conditions.

Analysis of Research Results

The results showing the existence of 27 coffee accessions with a variety of similarities become an indicator that Karo Regency has great potential in the development of coffee varieties. This research provides a basis for the development of more targeted breeding strategies, as well as assisting in the promotion of Karo coffee as a superior product. The existence of the farthest kinship between K26 and K8 accessions also shows that there are genetic variations that can be utilized for the development of new varieties that are more adaptive. Furthermore, the data-based approach and in-depth research will be very useful to increase Indonesian coffee competitiveness in the global market, as well as maintaining the sustainability of this valuable natural resource.

Methodology

The research was conducted using a survey and sampling method, with accidental sampling methods used to collect data from various locations in Karo Regency. The observation of coffee morphological characters was based on the descriptor guide from the International Plant Genetic Resources Institute (IPGRI). The results showed that there were 27 coffee accessions found in various locations, with relatively close similarity. The farthest kinship value found was 8,813, which came from the K26 and K8 accessions.

Conclusion

In conclusion, this research provides valuable information about the morphology of coffee plants in Karo Regency, as well as opens opportunities for further research that can contribute to the development of the coffee industry in Indonesia. The data-based approach and in-depth research will be very useful to increase Indonesian coffee competitiveness in the global market, as well as maintaining the sustainability of this valuable natural resource. Therefore, it is recommended that further research be conducted to explore the potential of coffee plants in Karo Regency, and to develop new varieties that are more adaptive to different environmental conditions.
