Mobile Legend Online Game Playing Activities and Student Communication Style: A Correlational Study
Introduction
In today's digital age, online gaming has become a popular form of entertainment among students. Mobile Legends, a multiplayer online battle arena (MOBA) game, is one of the most widely played games among teenagers. However, the impact of online gaming on students' communication styles has been a topic of concern among educators and parents. This study aims to explore the relationship between Mobile Legends online game playing activities and student communication style when playing among SMAS Methodist-1 Medan students.
Theoretical Background
Communication theory, mass communication, new media, internet, games, and communication styles are some of the theories that underlie this research. These theories are used to understand how the activities of playing online mobile legends and student communication styles are interrelated and form a pattern. Communication theory, in particular, is concerned with the process of exchanging information between individuals or groups through verbal or non-verbal means. Mass communication, on the other hand, refers to the process of communicating information to a large audience through various media channels.
Research Methodology
This study employed a correlational research design to examine the relationship between Mobile Legends online game playing activities and student communication style when playing. The sampling technique used was proportionate stratified sampling and simple random sampling. A total of 72 respondents, consisting of Medan Methodist-1 High School students who actively play Mobile Legends, were selected for the study. Data collection was carried out through the distribution of questionnaires.
Data Analysis
Data analysis techniques used in this study included single table analysis, cross table analysis, and hypothesis testing using the Spearman's RHO Rank-Order Correlation formula. The data analysis was conducted using the SPSS 22 application, which produced a correlation coefficient of 0.310.
Research Results
The correlation coefficient of 0.310 indicates a fairly low correlation between Mobile Legends online game playing activities and student communication style when playing. According to the Guilford scale, this correlation coefficient shows a fairly low correlation but certainly with the strength of the influence (D) between variables X and Y by 9.6%. This means that the activity of playing online game Mobile Legends has a relatively low influence on student communication styles when playing games.
Implications and Recommendations
The results of this study suggest that although there is a correlation between the activities of playing online mobile legends games with student communication styles, the effect is not too strong. This indicates that other factors also play an important role in forming student communication styles when playing games. Therefore, further research is needed to examine other factors that might affect student communication styles when playing online mobile legends games. Additionally, research can also be repeated by involving respondents from various backgrounds and schools to obtain a more comprehensive picture.
Limitations of the Study
It is essential to note that this research only focuses on students at Medan 1 Methodist 1 High School. Therefore, the results of this study may not necessarily be generalized to a wider student population. Future studies should consider involving respondents from various backgrounds and schools to obtain a more comprehensive understanding of the relationship between Mobile Legends online game playing activities and student communication style when playing.
Conclusion
In conclusion, this study provides insights into the relationship between Mobile Legends online game playing activities and student communication style when playing among SMAS Methodist-1 Medan students. The results suggest that although there is a correlation between the activities of playing online mobile legends games with student communication styles, the effect is not too strong. Further research is needed to examine other factors that might affect student communication styles when playing online mobile legends games.
