Musabaqah Tilawatil Quran (MTQ) is an Islamic art competition that aims to convey the messages of the Qur'an in everyday life. This competition involves various branches of activities, including reading, memorizing, writing, understanding, interpreting, and conveying guidelines from the Qur'an. At the Medan City level, the registration process for MTQ participants is still carried out manually, namely by filling out the registration form and attaching the original identity document, such as the Identity Card (KTP). KTP is the official identity of the Indonesian population that functions as legal evidence. The registration process lasted for only 3 days and included participants from 21 districts throughout the city of Medan.
The Challenges of Manual Registration Process
However, this manual method can be a challenge given the large number of registrants in a short time. Therefore, we need a system that can help officers in the registration process and make it easier for the committee to validate the KTP documents for prospective participants. In this study, seven important data fields will be read, namely the Population Identification Number (NIK), Name, Gender, Place of Birth, Date of Birth, Work, and Address.
Applying Optical Character Recognition (OCR) Method
To deal with this problem, this study applied the optical character recognition (OCR) method with a matching template algorithm. This method allows the system to automatically recognize and extract information from KTP documents in the form of images. In this study, the dataset used amounted to 132 images, of which 25 images were used as training data and 107 images as testing data. The results of the application of this method showed an accuracy rate of 93.29%.
