Introduction
The University of Sumatera Utara (USU) Faculty of Social and Political Sciences (FISIP) Department of Communication Sciences is one of the leading departments in the field of communication studies in Indonesia. However, like any other department, it faces challenges in meeting the expectations of its students. This study aims to explore the image of the USU Department of Communication Sciences in the eyes of its students and their hopes for the department. Through a descriptive study, this research aims to provide an in-depth understanding of the condition of the department based on existing facts.
Methodology
This study employed a quantitative and qualitative descriptive method to collect and analyze data. A sample of 47 students from the USU Department of Communication Sciences was obtained through the calculation of the Yamane Taro Formula. The sampling technique used was proportionate stratified random sampling. Data collection was carried out through literature studies and field studies, and analyzed using a single table analysis.
Results
The results of this study show a gap between students' images and expectations of the USU Department of Communication Sciences. Although 58.7% of students considered the department trusted and reliable, 73.4% wanted the department to be more in demand. This indicates that there is a mismatch between the students' perceptions of the department's reliability and their expectations of the department's performance.
Furthermore, the results show that there is an imbalance between expectations and reality. Although 59.1% of students feel good responsiveness from the department, 51.6% said that the departmental physical facilities are lacking. In addition, 57.4% of students feel that the department is lacking empathy. This suggests that the department needs to pay attention to aspects of physical facilities and empathy to meet the expectations of its students.
