Growth And Production Of Watermelon (Citrullus Vulgaris Schard) With Potassium Fertilizer Application
Improve the Quality of Watermelon with Potassium Fertilizer Application
Watermelon, a refreshing fruit with a sweet taste that many people like, has great potential to be developed in Indonesia. So that the quality of watermelons is maintained and abundant crop yields, it takes appropriate efforts, one of which is with the use of potassium fertilizer. Potassium fertilizer plays a crucial role in plant growth and development, and its application can significantly impact the quality and productivity of watermelon plants.
Research conducted at the Tanjung Selamat Regional Technical Implementation Unit, Pancur Batu District, Deli Serdang Regency in July-October 2022, proves the effectiveness of potassium fertilizer applications on watermelon growth and production. This study uses a random group design complete with 6 treatments, namely:
- 0 g/plant (without potassium fertilizer)
- 2.5 L liquid potassium fertilizer/ha
- 5 L Liquid Potassium Fertilizer/Ha
- 7.5 L Liquid Potassium Fertilizer/Ha
- 3,33 kg of solid potassium fertilizer/ha
- 10 kg of solid potassium fertilizer/ha
The results showed that the application of potassium fertilizer had a significant impact on all observed parameters. The length of the tendril, the number of leaves, the weight of the fruit per plant, and the weight of the fruit per plot reaches its peak in the application of a liquid potassium fertilizer 7.5 L/ha, which is not significantly different from the 5 L/Ha application. Meanwhile, the diameter of the fruit and the thickness of the flesh of the fruit is obtained in the application of 7.5 L/ha liquid potassium fertilizer. The thinnest fruit skin is obtained in the application of 7.5 L/Ha of liquid potassium fertilizer, which is not significantly different from the application of 10 kg/ha solid potassium fertilizer.
Interestingly, the highest fruit sweetness level is achieved by the application of 7.5 L/Ha of Liquid Potassium fertilizer, and is significantly different from other treatments. The results of this study reveal the fact that the use of potassium fertilizer, especially in liquid form, can improve the quality and productivity of watermelon plants.
Why is Potassium Fertilizer Important for Watermelon?
Potassium plays an important role in plant physiological processes, including:
Increasing Vegetative Growth
Potassium helps in the process of growth of roots, stems, and leaves, so that plants become stronger and healthier. This is because potassium helps to regulate the balance of water and nutrients in the plant, allowing it to grow and develop optimally.
Increasing Water Absorption and Nutrition
Potassium helps maintain the balance of water in plants, so that plants are more resistant to drought. This is because potassium helps to regulate the opening and closing of stomata, allowing the plant to absorb water and nutrients more efficiently.
Improving the Quality of the Fruit
Potassium plays a role in the formation of sugar, sour, and color in the fruit, so that the fruit becomes sweeter, fresher, and has good textured. This is because potassium helps to regulate the metabolism of sugars and other compounds in the fruit, allowing it to develop its characteristic flavor and texture.
Increasing Resistance to Disease
Potassium helps strengthen the plant immune system, so that plants are more resistant to disease. This is because potassium helps to regulate the production of defense compounds in the plant, allowing it to fight off pathogens and other diseases.
Suggestions for Farmers
- The use of liquid potassium fertilizer with the right dose can help improve the quality and yield of watermelon harvest.
- The dose of potassium fertilizer must be adjusted to the type of soil, climate conditions, and plant varieties.
- The use of potassium fertilizer must be balanced with the use of other fertilizers, such as nitrogen and phosphorus fertilizers, to ensure optimal plant growth.
- Consult with agricultural experts to determine the right dosage and type of potassium fertilizer for your plants.
By paying attention to these factors, farmers can improve watermelon quality and get more abundant harvests.
Conclusion
The use of potassium fertilizer is an effective way to improve the quality and productivity of watermelon plants. By understanding the role of potassium in plant growth and development, farmers can make informed decisions about the use of potassium fertilizer in their watermelon crops. With the right application of potassium fertilizer, farmers can expect to see improvements in the length of the tendril, the number of leaves, the weight of the fruit per plant, and the weight of the fruit per plot. Additionally, the use of potassium fertilizer can help to improve the quality of the fruit, making it sweeter, fresher, and more textured. By following the suggestions outlined in this article, farmers can take advantage of the benefits of potassium fertilizer and improve their watermelon yields.
Recommendations for Future Research
- Further research is needed to investigate the effects of potassium fertilizer on other crops, such as tomatoes and cucumbers.
- Studies should be conducted to determine the optimal dosage and application method of potassium fertilizer for different types of soil and climate conditions.
- Research should be conducted to investigate the effects of potassium fertilizer on the nutritional content of watermelon, including its vitamin and mineral content.
By conducting further research in these areas, farmers and agricultural experts can gain a better understanding of the role of potassium fertilizer in plant growth and development, and make informed decisions about its use in their crops.
Q: What is potassium fertilizer and how does it help watermelon plants?
A: Potassium fertilizer is a type of fertilizer that contains potassium, a essential nutrient for plant growth and development. Potassium helps to regulate the balance of water and nutrients in the plant, allowing it to grow and develop optimally. It also plays a role in the formation of sugar, sour, and color in the fruit, making it sweeter, fresher, and more textured.
Q: How does potassium fertilizer improve the quality of watermelon?
A: Potassium fertilizer helps to improve the quality of watermelon by increasing the length of the tendril, the number of leaves, the weight of the fruit per plant, and the weight of the fruit per plot. It also helps to improve the texture and flavor of the fruit, making it sweeter and more refreshing.
Q: What are the benefits of using liquid potassium fertilizer for watermelon?
A: Liquid potassium fertilizer is a convenient and efficient way to apply potassium to watermelon plants. It is easily absorbed by the plant, allowing it to grow and develop optimally.
