Introduction

Materials and Methods

This study was conducted at the Biology and Livestock Reproductive Laboratory, Animal Husbandry Study Program, Faculty of Agriculture, University of North Sumatra, in the period June to August 2017. The worms used were the type of Lumbricus rubellus with an initial weight of 5 grams. The design used was a complete random design (RAL) with four different treatments and each was repeated five times. The treatment is:

  • P0: 100% Fermented pig feces
  • P1: 90% Pork feces + 10% Mustard waste
  • P2: 80% Pork feces + 10% Mustard waste
  • P3: 70% Pork feces + 30% Mustard waste

The parameters studied in this study include the increase in the weight of worms and swelling of the worm media.

Results

The results showed that there was a significant difference (p <0.05) between the treatment of the increase in worm weight and the depreciation of the worm media. This shows that the media composition used affects the growth and health of worms.

Discussion

The use of fermented pig stool mixed with mustard waste at the 80% level of pig feces and 20% of mustard greens has a significant positive effect in increasing the growth of Lumbricus rubellus worms. In addition, the use of fermented pig stools added with mustard greens in the treatment of P0, P1, and P2 proved effective in supporting the growth and breeding of this earthworm.

Conclusion

This study demonstrates the potential of using fermented pig stool containing white mustard waste as a growth medium for Lumbricus rubellus earthworms. The results of this study can contribute to the development of sustainable agriculture practices, where organic waste can be processed into high-value products such as organic fertilizer and animal feed.
