Introduction
Soil fertility is a crucial factor in plant growth and development. Andisol soil, a type of soil that is rich in volcanic ash, has unique characteristics that make it challenging to manage. One of the ways to improve soil fertility is by adding silicate, a natural material that can increase the activity of soil microorganisms and improve soil structure. This study aims to determine the most effective and efficient plant silicate material in providing silicate to Andisol soil.
Methodology
The study was conducted at the Chemistry Laboratory and the Faculty of Agriculture, University of North Sumatra, Medan. The method used is a complete random design (ran) with the treatment of natural silicate giving consisting of A (seaweed), B (sugar cane), and C (rice straw), where each natural silicate is modified at different pH (4, 7, and 10) and repeated three times, so there are 33 sets of treatment. After being incubated for 45 days, analysis of dissolved silica levels, soil C-organic, P available, and Freundlich adsorption isotherm was conducted.
Results
The results showed that the administration of natural silicate had no significant influence on the availability of soil P, which was caused by the absence of P fertilization. However, the most effective and efficient natural silicate in increasing the C-organic content was silicate derived from seaweed leaves. In addition, rice straw leaves are proven to be the most effective natural silicate in increasing dissolved silica levels, while sugar cane leaves can reduce the rate of adsorption reactions.
