This study aimed to investigate the effect of the frequency of spraying leaf fertilizer and shade on the growth of Aquilaria Malaccensis seeds.

Background

Aquilaria Malaccensis Lamk is a tree species that grows slowly, making it challenging to cultivate. However, its potential as an industrial crop and its role in supporting reforestation and greening efforts in Indonesia make it an important species to study. Research Methods

This study was conducted on open land in front of the Faculty of Agriculture, University of North Sumatra, from March to May 2014. The research methodology used a random factorial design, complete with two factors: the frequency of spraying leaf fertilizer (Gandasil D) and the shade level (0%, 35%, and 75%). Various plant growth parameters were measured, including the height of the seeds, stem diameter, number of leaves, leaf area, canopy wet weight, fresh root weight, canopy dry weight, and root dry weight.

Research Results

The results showed that the frequency of spraying leaf fertilizer had a significant effect on all seed growth parameters. The more often spraying is done, the better the growth of Aquilaria Malaccensis seeds. However, the effect of shade only has a significant effect on increasing the diameter of the seed stems. The interaction between the frequency of spraying fertilizer and shade does not show a significant effect on all measured parameters.

The increasing growth of Aquilaria Malaccensis seeds produced from the frequency of spraying leaf fertilizer can be explained by the nutritional content contained in Gandasil D. This leaf fertilizer contains macro and micro nutrition, which is essential to support the process of photosynthesis and metabolism of plants. By providing adequate nutritional intake, plants can grow more optimally.

Conversely, the results that indicate that the shade does not significantly affect all parameters, except the stem diameter, suggest that Aquilaria Malaccensis may be more adaptive in open conditions. However, shade still has a positive effect on the diameter, which can help strengthen the structure of the stem to deal with hard environmental conditions.

To achieve maximum results in aquilaria cultivation, farmers and farmers must pay attention to the frequency of spraying fertilizer and consider the appropriate use of shade.
