Formulation and Effectiveness of Skin Anti-Aging Effectiveness from the Ethanol Extract Gel Mango Fruit Extract (Mangifera Indica L.)

Introduction

The problem of skin aging caused by excessive exposure to ultraviolet rays has become a major concern in the field of skin care. Mango skin (Mangifera indica L.) is rich in AHA (Alpha hydroxyl acid), flavonoids, beta carotene, and vitamins A, C, and E which are a source of antioxidants. These substances can protect the skin from free radicals, including harmful ultraviolet rays. Therefore, this study aims to formulate and evaluate the preparation of the Ethanol Extract Gel of Mango Skin and test its effectiveness as an anti-aging product on the skin.

The Importance of Skin Anti-Aging

Skin aging is a natural process that occurs due to the accumulation of free radicals in the skin, leading to the breakdown of collagen and elastin fibers. This can result in the appearance of fine lines, wrinkles, and age spots. Excessive exposure to ultraviolet rays is a major contributor to skin aging, as it can cause damage to the skin's DNA, leading to the formation of free radicals. Therefore, the development of effective anti-aging products is crucial in preventing and reversing skin aging.

Mango Skin as a Source of Antioxidants

Mango skin is rich in antioxidants, including AHA, flavonoids, beta carotene, and vitamins A, C, and E. These substances can protect the skin from free radicals, including harmful ultraviolet rays. Flavonoids, for example, have been shown to have anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties, while beta carotene can help to protect the skin from damage caused by UV radiation. Therefore, mango skin has great potential as a source of antioxidants for skin care products.

Research Methodology

In this study, the initial stage involved making simplicia, which was followed by testing the characteristics and screening of simplicia. Ethanol extract of mango skin is then made using the maceration method using 96% ethanol. After that, the characteristic testing and phytochemical screening in the resulting ethanol extract. This research method also includes testing antioxidant activity using the DPPH method and gel preparation formulation. Evaluation carried out includes organoleptic testing, homogeneity, stability test for 12 weeks, cycle tests, centrifugation, pH measurement, viscosity, dissemination, irritation, and anti-aging effectiveness in volunteer skin measured using skin analyzer and moisture checker. The data obtained were analyzed using the Kruskal Wallis and Mann Whitney methods.

Research Result

The test results of simplicia characteristics showed a water content of 6.66%, water soluble extract 21.56%, extracts that were soluble in ethanol 26.73%, total ash 5.92%, and not acid -soluble ash 1.79%. Meanwhile, the characteristics of mango skin ethanol extract show a water content of 12.15%, total ash 2.05%, and an acid -soluble ash of 0.74%. The results of phytochemical screening show that both simplicia and ethanol extract of mango skin contain flavonoids, tannins, saponins, glycosides, and steroids.

Antioxidant Activity of Mango Skin Ethanol Extract

Antioxidant activity of Mango skin ethanol extract is classified as a very strong antioxidant with an IC50 value of 7,0870 ppm. The gel produced from this extract is proven to be homogeneous, with a pH of 5.69-6.34, viscosity 2340.8-2953.07 CP, and a scattered diameter of 5.3-6.6 cm. This gel is also stable for 12 weeks of storage and does not cause irritation to the skin of volunteers.

Effectiveness of Anti-Aging

From the results of testing the effectiveness of anti-aging, it was found that the average percentage of recovery of skin moisture ranged from 5.87% to 28.72%, uniformity of 3.42% to 31.34%, narrowing of pores 2.76% to 28.92%, reduction of stains 3.54% to 31.24%, and decreased The number of wrinkles is between 5.14% to 30.06%. The anti-aging effectiveness test shows that each gel preparation tested shows a significant difference in facial skin recovery (p <0.05).

Conclusion

Ethanol extract of mangoes proven to be included in the category of antioxidants that are very strong and can be formulated into homogeneous gels, stable at room temperature, and does not cause irritation. The best extract concentration that shows maximum anti-aging effectiveness is found at a concentration of 1% (F3). This study provides evidence that mango skin has great potential in skin care products, especially in overcoming aging problems.
