Introduction

Food security is a critical issue that affects every region, including Padangsidimpuan City. Ensuring that everyone has access to sufficient, safe, and nutritious food is essential for maintaining public health and well-being. In this study, we conducted an analysis of the determinants of food security in Padangsidimpuan City, focusing on two key variables: the area of harvested land and the price of rice. Our research aims to provide insights into the factors that influence food security in this region and offer recommendations for improving food security in the future.

Methodology

Our study employed the Ordinary Least Square (OLS) method to analyze the relationship between the area of harvested land, rice prices, and the availability of rice in Padangsidimpuan City. We used monthly data from 2008 to 2010 and relied on EViews 6.0 analysis tools to process the data. The results of our analysis provide valuable information on the impact of these two variables on food security in the city.

Results

The estimated results of our analysis show that both the area of harvested land and rice prices have a positive influence on the availability of rice, which is an indicator of food security in Padangsidimpuan City. Specifically, our results indicate that the area of harvested land has a significant influence on food security at a confidence level of 1%, while the price of rice affects food security at a confidence level of 10%. The R-Square value obtained from this analysis is 0.9170, which suggests that this model is able to explain around 91.70% of the variability of the availability of rice in the city.

Further Analysis

The importance of food security extends beyond the availability of food to include accessibility and the ability of the community to obtain food. In the context of Padangsidimpuan City, the two factors analyzed - the area of land that was harvested and the price of rice - are interrelated fundamental aspects of food security.

The Area of Land that is Harvested

The land area that is harvested directly contributes to the amount of rice produced. If the land area is widespread and well managed, rice production will increase. However, the challenge faced is how to increase the area of harvested land, especially in the midst of rapid urbanization and the conversion of land functions. Therefore, there is a need for policies that support sustainable agriculture and optimization of existing agricultural land.

Rice Prices

The price of rice also plays an important role in determining food security. If the price of rice is too high, then public access to food will be hampered, even though the availability of rice is sufficient. Therefore, controlling rice prices must be a priority, both through market interventions and policies that support price stability.

Conclusion

This study demonstrates that the two variables studied have a significant influence on food security in Padangsidimpuan City. Our findings suggest that increasing the area of agricultural land, supporting sustainable agricultural practices, and supervising and controlling rice prices are essential steps towards improving food security in this region. By implementing these strategic steps, it is expected that food security in Padangsidimpuan City can be more guaranteed in the future.

Recommendations

Based on our analysis, we recommend the following strategies to improve food security in Padangsidimpuan City:

  1. Increase the area of agricultural land: Encourage farmers to cultivate more land and implement sustainable agricultural practices to increase rice production.
  2. Support sustainable agricultural practices: Implement policies that promote sustainable agriculture, such as crop rotation, organic farming, and conservation agriculture.
  3. Supervise and control rice prices: Establish a price stabilization mechanism to ensure that rice prices remain affordable for the public.
  4. Promote food accessibility: Implement programs that improve food accessibility, such as food assistance programs and food distribution networks.
