The Covid-19 pandemic has brought about significant changes in the way we live, work, and educate our children. The shift to online learning has presented numerous challenges for parents, particularly in terms of maintaining their mental health. This study aims to examine the mental health impact of parents during the Covid-19 pandemic period, understand the communication process in families with children in Private Catholic Budi Murni 2 Medan, and explore family communication models that affect parents' mental health when educating their children.
This study employed a qualitative approach and descriptive method to collect data through in-depth interviews with eight informants and two triangulation informants. The sampling method used was purposive sampling, focusing on parents who experienced the direct impact of the pandemic. The data collection process was guided by the research objectives, and the sampling continued until data saturation was achieved.
The results of this study showed that the mental health of parents experienced a significant decline during the pandemic. This decline was characterized by excessive anxiety and emotional changes, particularly when accompanying children in online learning. The uncertainty caused by the pandemic and the challenges of distance learning added to the psychological burden of parents, affecting interaction and communication in the family.
The family communication model identified in this study included five of the eight families who adhered to the pluralistic model. Families with this model showed a preference for holding open conversations between family members, while important decisions remained discussed and agreed upon together by all members. This indicates that even though there is pressure felt, parents are still trying to create a healthy communication environment in the house.
