Factors Causing Expired Drugs and the Value of Drug Loss (Stock Value Expired) Caused in the Pharmaceutical Installation of RSUD Dr. R.M. Djoelham Binjai 2018
The management of drug supplies is a crucial cycle in hospital pharmacy installations that support health services. The success of pharmaceutical installation functions is heavily dependent on effective and efficient drug management, to prevent expired drug stock. When expired drug stock occurs, the impact of the material loss that arises can be a significant burden on hospitals and the community. This study aims to identify drug inventory management, analyze the factors causing expiration of drugs, and determine the value of losses due to expired drug stock in Dr. R.M. Djoelham Binjai during 2018.
Drug supply management is a complex process that involves various stakeholders, including pharmaceutical officers, drug users, and hospital administrators. Effective drug management requires a good understanding of the needs of patients, the availability of drugs, and the logistics of drug distribution. Inadequate drug management can lead to expired drug stock, which can result in material losses and compromise the quality of health services.
This study used a qualitative and quantitative approach to identify the factors causing expiration of drugs and determine the value of losses due to expired drug stock in Dr. R.M. Djoelham Binjai during 2018. Data were obtained through in-depth interviews with 8 informants, observations, and document reviews. In addition, losses due to expired drug stock were also calculated in detail.
Based on the results of the study, it was found that there were 11 types of drugs (2.78%) who had expired throughout 2018, which were included in the slow-moving category. Some of the factors that are the main causes of expired drugs include:
- Lack of Human Resource Performance: The study found that the performance of pharmaceutical staff was a major factor contributing to expired drug stock. Pharmaceutical staff were not adequately trained to manage drug supplies, leading to errors in drug ordering and storage.
- Unclear Division of Tasks and Responsibilities: The study found that there was a lack of clarity in the division of tasks and responsibilities among pharmaceutical officers and drug users. This led to confusion and errors in drug management.
- Lack of Good Understanding and Communication: The study found that there was a lack of good understanding and communication between pharmaceutical officers and drug users. This led to errors in drug ordering and storage.
The study found that drug logistics management in Dr. R.M. Djoelham Binjai has not been implemented properly. This results in expired drug stock which results in material losses. Therefore, it is recommended that the hospital takes a few steps to improve:
- Additional Training for Pharmaceutical Staff: The hospital should provide additional training for pharmaceutical staff to improve their performance and knowledge of drug management.
- Update the Formulary: The hospital should update the formulary to ensure drug planning and procurement according to real needs.
- Increase Data Accuracy and Information: The hospital should increase data accuracy and information about drug stock between pharmaceutical officers and users, to avoid similar problems in the future.
By improving management and communication in pharmaceutical installations, it is hoped that losses due to expired drugs can be minimized, so that health services at Dr. R.M. Djoelham Binjai can be more effective and efficient.
This study has several limitations. Firstly, the study only focused on Dr. R.M. Djoelham Binjai and may not be generalizable to other hospitals. Secondly, the study only analyzed data from 2018 and may not reflect the current situation. Finally, the study only focused on the factors causing expiration of drugs and did not explore other factors that may contribute to expired drug stock.
Future research should focus on exploring other factors that contribute to expired drug stock, such as supply chain management and inventory control. Additionally, future research should focus on developing strategies to improve drug management and reduce material losses.
In conclusion, this study found that drug logistics management in Dr. R.M. Djoelham Binjai has not been implemented properly, resulting in expired drug stock and material losses. The study recommends that the hospital takes a few steps to improve, including additional training for pharmaceutical staff, updating the formulary, and increasing data accuracy and information. By improving management and communication in pharmaceutical installations, it is hoped that losses due to expired drugs can be minimized, so that health services at Dr. R.M. Djoelham Binjai can be more effective and efficient.
