Experience of Nurses in Carrying Out Trauma Management in Emergency Patients Traffic Accident at the Emergency Room of Cut Meutia Lhokseumawe Hospital
Introduction
Trauma is a major public health concern worldwide, with traffic accidents being one of the leading causes of death and disability. In Indonesia, trauma management is influenced by the culture and habits of the community, with hospitals in Aceh applying Islamic-based service concepts in patient care. This study aimed to explore the experience of nurses in carrying out trauma management in emergency patients due to traffic accidents at the Cut Meutia Lhokseumawe Hospital IGD.
Background
Trauma is a major public health concern worldwide, with around 50% of patients who experienced trauma dying within the first 10 minutes due to massive bleeding and severe head injury. In Indonesia, trauma management is influenced by the culture and habits of the community. Hospitals in Aceh, including Cut Meutia Lhokseumawe Hospital, apply Islamic-based service concepts in patient care, which includes activities such as prayers, dhikr, prayers, prayers, and recitations of the Koran.
Methodology
This study used a descriptive phenomenological research design, with 10 nurses in the hospital emergency room as participants. Data was collected through in-depth interviews using open questions, and analyzed using the Colaizzi method. The purpose of this study was to express the experience of nurses in carrying out trauma management in emergency patients due to traffic accidents at the Cut Meutia Lhokseumawe Hospital IGD.
Results
The results of this study identified four main themes related to nurses' experience in trauma management:
Comprehensive Trauma Management Approach
Nurses apply a comprehensive approach that includes the initial evaluation of the patient's condition, identification of injury, and immediate and appropriate handling. This approach is crucial in emergency situations, where speed and accuracy in handling patients are very crucial. The comprehensive approach also includes the identification of potential complications and the implementation of preventive measures.
Fast Patient Handling and Religious Approaches
In emergency situations, speed and accuracy in handling patients are very crucial. Religious approaches, including prayer and good deeds, become an important part of calm patients and provide emotional support. Nurses also reported that the Islamic-based service concept in patient care, such as prayers and recitations of the Koran, helped to create a calm and peaceful environment for patients.
Physical and Mental Fatigue
Physical and mental fatigue is also a challenge that must be faced by nurses in emergency situations. Nurses reported that they often experience physical and mental fatigue due to the high workload and the emotional demands of the job. This fatigue can affect their ability to provide high-quality care to patients.
Challenges and Recommendations
From the results of this study, it was recommended to hospital management to hold training and seminars on trauma management to increase nurses' knowledge and skills in the emergency room in dealing with emergency patients. This training will not only improve patient care results, but also increase the confidence and welfare of nurses in carrying out their duties. By paying attention to the existing cultural and religious context, hospitals in Aceh can create a work environment that is more supportive for health workers, as well as providing better services for patients, especially in an emergency situation.
Conclusion
This study aimed to explore the experience of nurses in carrying out trauma management in emergency patients due to traffic accidents at the Cut Meutia Lhokseumawe Hospital IGD. The results of this study identified four main themes related to nurses' experience in trauma management, including comprehensive trauma management approach, fast patient handling and religious approaches, physical and mental fatigue, and challenges and recommendations. The study recommends that hospital management hold training and seminars on trauma management to increase nurses' knowledge and skills in the emergency room in dealing with emergency patients.
Limitations
This study has several limitations. Firstly, the study was conducted in a single hospital, which may limit the generalizability of the findings. Secondly, the study used a descriptive phenomenological research design, which may not provide a comprehensive understanding of the experience of nurses in trauma management. Finally, the study did not explore the impact of trauma management on patient outcomes.
Future Research Directions
Future research should aim to explore the impact of trauma management on patient outcomes. Additionally, future research should aim to explore the experience of nurses in trauma management in different cultural and religious contexts. Finally, future research should aim to develop and evaluate the effectiveness of trauma management training programs for nurses.
