Introduction

The Medan Area University Library has been utilizing the Slims Software (Library Management Information Service System) to automate its library management processes. This automation system has been integrated with all faculty library branches, aiming to provide fast and accurate information to users and increase efficiency in the library management process. However, despite the benefits provided by this system, there are still some deficiencies that need attention. This study aims to evaluate the library automation system using the Pieces framework, which includes performance, information, economy, control, efficiency, and services provided to users.

Methodology

This study employed a descriptive qualitative method, which included in-depth interviews and direct observations. The data collected from these methods were then analyzed to reveal and describe various aspects of the library automation system. The study aimed to identify the strengths and weaknesses of the existing system and provide recommendations for improvement.

The Pieces Framework

The Pieces framework is a comprehensive guide to assessing the strengths and weaknesses of the existing library automation system. The framework consists of six components:

  • Performance: This component assesses the speed and accuracy of the system, as well as its ability to provide access to information.
  • Information: This component evaluates the relevance and accuracy of the data provided by the system.
  • Economy: This component assesses the operational costs of the system and its impact on the library's budget.
  • Control: This component evaluates the system's ability to control and monitor its processes.
  • Efficiency: This component assesses the system's ability to use resources efficiently.
  • Service: This component evaluates the system's ability to provide services to users.

Evaluation of the Library Automation System

Using the Pieces framework, this study evaluated the library automation system in the Medan Area University Library. The results showed that the system has been performing well in terms of speed and accuracy, but there is still room for improvement in terms of data completeness. The system is able to provide relevant and current data, but an increase in data accuracy is necessary.

From an economic perspective, the automation system has increased efficiency, but high costs are a challenge for further development. The control system is quite good, but periodic audits and monitoring are necessary to ensure all processes run smoothly. Efficiency in the use of resources is also a concern, where efforts need to be made to reduce operational costs. Finally, the service aspect shows an increase in user satisfaction, but user feedback must continue to be collected to identify areas that require improvement.

Conclusion

This study shows that although the automation system in the Medan Area University Library has shown significant progress, there are still some challenges that need to be overcome. Efforts to improve in lack of areas and more efficient cost management will be very helpful in optimizing this automation system and providing greater benefits for library users.

Recommendations

Based on the findings of this study, the following recommendations are made:

  • Improve data completeness: Efforts should be made to improve data completeness to ensure that the system provides accurate and relevant information to users.
  • Reduce operational costs: Efforts should be made to reduce operational costs to make the system more sustainable and efficient.
  • Continuously monitor and evaluate: The system should be continuously monitored and evaluated to ensure that it is performing well and providing the necessary services to users.
  • Collect user feedback: User feedback should be collected regularly to identify areas that require improvement and to ensure that the system is meeting the needs of users.

By implementing these recommendations, the library automation system in the Medan Area University Library can be optimized to provide greater benefits for library users.
