Error Analysis on Using Punctuation in English Text: A Study on Sixth Semester Students
Introduction
Punctuation is the backbone of effective writing. It plays a crucial role in conveying the intended meaning of a text, and its misuse can lead to confusion and misinterpretation. In academic writing, the use of good punctuation is essential to produce clear and effective writing. Despite its importance, many students struggle with punctuation, leading to errors in their writing. This study aims to describe the mistakes made by students in the use of punctuation in English text, with a focus on sixth semester students from the English language study program at the University of North Sumatra.

Punctuation is an essential skill in writing, and its use is very necessary to produce clear and effective writing, especially in academic writing. Methodology
This study used qualitative descriptive methods to explore the problem of errors in using punctuation by sixth semester students. The researchers focused on the types of errors made by students in the placement of punctuation, including points, commas, apostrophes, question marks, and exciting marks. The study also investigated the causes of the error in using punctuation by the student in the 2016/2017 academic year.
Results
The results of the study show that the types of errors commonly made by students are removal of dot, commas, question marks, and exciting marks. Although in general the sixth semester students have mastered the use of punctuation, there are a number of students who still do not fully understand the use of comma, points, and exciting marks. They show a lack of accuracy, removal, and minimal understanding of the use of punctuation correctly.

Errors in the use of punctuation often rooted in the lack of understanding of the functions and rules of using each punctuation. For example, the use of inappropriate commas can significantly change the sentence meaning. For example, the phrase "Let's Eat, Children!" The meaning is different from "Let's, eat children!" which indicates terrible actions.
In addition, not all students realize that punctuation also serves to influence intonation and rhythm when reading. The use of the right punctuation can help readers to better understand the message the author wants to convey. Therefore, it is important for teachers to give more attention to the teaching of punctuation in the English learning curriculum.
