Introduction

This study aims to describe the mistakes made by students in the use of punctuation in English text, with a focus on sixth semester students from the English language study program at the University of North Sumatra.

The study also investigated the causes of the error in using punctuation by the student in the 2016/2017 academic year.

The results of the study show that the types of errors commonly made by students are removal of dot, commas, question marks, and exciting marks. Although in general the sixth semester students have mastered the use of punctuation, there are a number of students who still do not fully understand the use of comma, points, and exciting marks. They show a lack of accuracy, removal, and minimal understanding of the use of punctuation correctly.
