Environmental Sanitation Analysis and the Use of PPE as Well as Respiratory Complaints in Bird Breeders in the Deli Serdang Regency Rejo in 2024

Introduction

Bird farms in Indonesia are experiencing significant progress, especially seen from increasing market demand for quail eggs. According to data from the Central Statistics Agency, the consumption of quail eggs in Deli Serdang Regency increased from 0.143 in 2022 to 0.338 in 2023. This increased market demand is a good business opportunity for farmers, but it also has a negative impact. One of the problems faced is the particles that become air pollutants, especially unpleasant odors derived from bird dirt containing ammonia gas.

The Problem of Environmental Sanitation in Bird Farms

Building Rejo, there are several problems that surfaced on quail farms. The cage environment is not cleaned every day, bird droppings are left dry, the place of feed and drinking does not get routine maintenance, and the location of the farm adjacent to residential areas. In addition, some breeders also do not use adequate personal protective equipment (APD). This study aims to analyze the characteristics of farmers, environmental sanitation conditions, the use of PPE, and respiratory complaints in the Puyuh Bangun Rejo farm.

Research Methodology

The type of research used is descriptive research with a research population of 20 breeders. Sampling technique using total sampling. The results of the univariate analysis show that the livestock environmental sanitation meets the standards in 3 livestock (60%), while the use of PPE by breeders does not meet the standards in 3 livestock (60%). In addition, there are complaints of breathing in 11 breeders (55%).

Characteristics of Bird Breeders in Rejo

The majority of bird breeders built by Rejo are men (60%), with the most age groups in the range of 31-40 years (45%). The highest level of education owned is secondary education (60%), with the work experience of farmers of more than 2 years (70%) and working hours an average of less than or equal to 8 hours (65%).

The Importance of Environmental Sanitation and PPE in Bird Farms

Increased demand for quail eggs not only provides financial benefits for farmers, but also requires them to pay more attention to sanitation and health aspects. Bird droppings that are not well managed can create serious health problems, both for the birds themselves and for breeders and the surrounding community. Ammonia gas, which is the result of the decomposition of dirt, can cause irritation of the respiratory tract and contribute to more serious health problems if not handled properly.

The Role of PPE in Protecting Farmers' Health

The use of adequate PPE is very important to protect farmers from exposure to harmful substances. However, the data shows that many breeders built by Rejo are still ignoring the use of PPE. Education about the importance of APD and environmental sanitation is very necessary so that farmers can operate more safely and healthily. In addition, the government and health institutions need to provide support and counseling to farmers to increase awareness of the importance of occupational health.

Conclusion

By prioritizing good sanitation and the use of PPE, it is hoped that bird farming in Rejo can not only meet market demand, but also maintain the health of farmers and the community. This is an important step towards better livestock sustainability in the future.

Recommendations

Based on the results of this study, it is recommended to farmers to use masks with gas filters, cleaning the cage every day, and pay attention to the sanitation of the livestock environment. In addition, it is important for farmers to conduct regular health checks so that health complaints can be detected early.

Future Research Directions

Future research can focus on the development of more effective PPE for farmers, as well as the implementation of environmental sanitation programs in bird farms. Additionally, research can be conducted on the economic benefits of prioritizing environmental sanitation and PPE in bird farms.

Limitations of the Study

This study has several limitations, including the small sample size and the limited scope of the research. Future studies can aim to increase the sample size and scope of the research to provide more comprehensive insights into the environmental sanitation and PPE practices in bird farms.

Conclusion

In conclusion, this study highlights the importance of environmental sanitation and PPE in bird farms. By prioritizing good sanitation and the use of PPE, it is hoped that bird farming in Rejo can not only meet market demand, but also maintain the health of farmers and the community. This is an important step towards better livestock sustainability in the future.
