Introduction

Effective communication between flight attendants and passengers is a crucial aspect of the aviation industry. It plays a significant role in ensuring a safe, comfortable, and enjoyable flight experience for passengers. In this study, we aim to analyze the effectiveness of verbal and non-verbal communication from flight attendants and stewards of P.T. Garuda Indonesia, Tbk against passengers. Through a case study approach, this research provides an in-depth picture of the interaction between flight attendants, stewards, and passengers.

Methodology

This study uses a qualitative methodology with data collection techniques in the form of interviews and participatory observations. Seven informants who were randomly selected using purposive sampling techniques, provided rich perspectives about their experiences when interacting with flight attendants and stewards. The theory of symbolic interactionism is used to analyze how the meaning is created and understood in communication between individuals.

The Importance of Effective Communication in Aviation Industry

Effective communication is essential in the aviation industry as it can make or break the flight experience for passengers. Flight attendants and stewards are not only responsible for ensuring the safety of passengers but also for providing a comfortable and enjoyable experience. They play a crucial role in creating a positive image of the airline and increasing passenger satisfaction.

Verbal and Non-Verbal Communication

Verbal and non-verbal communication are two essential aspects of effective communication. In this study, we found that both verbal and non-verbal communication conducted by flight attendants and stewards of P.T. Garuda Indonesia, Tbk are quite effective.

Verbal Communication

Verbal communication is an essential aspect of effective communication. Flight attendants and stewards use verbal communication to convey important information to passengers, such as safety procedures, flight schedules, and meal services. In this study, we found that passengers can understand the meaning of verbal communication carried out by flight attendants and stewards.

Non-Verbal Communication

Non-verbal communication is also an essential aspect of effective communication. Flight attendants and stewards use non-verbal communication to convey emotions and attitudes, such as friendliness, warmth, and concern. In this study, we found that non-verbal interactions, such as body language, facial expressions, and eye contact, make a significant contribution in creating a comfortable and pleasant atmosphere for passengers.

The Role of Non-Verbal Communication in Creating a Positive Flight Experience

Non-verbal communication plays a significant role in creating a positive flight experience for passengers. Passengers feel more connected and cared for when they receive non-verbal cues, such as a warm smile, a friendly gesture, or a concerned expression. This not only increases passenger satisfaction but can also increase the positive image of the airline as a whole.

Finally, the study only focused on verbal and non-verbal communication, and did not consider other aspects of effective communication, such as written communication.

Future Research Directions

Future research can build on the findings of this study by exploring other aspects of effective communication in the aviation industry. For example, researchers can investigate the role of written communication in creating a positive flight experience, or explore the impact of cultural differences on communication styles in the aviation industry. Additionally, researchers can also consider conducting a larger-scale study that involves multiple airlines and a larger sample size.

Conclusion

In conclusion, this study highlights the importance of effective communication in the aviation industry. Flight attendants and stewards who can communicate well, both verbally and non-verbally, play a crucial role in creating a positive and unforgettable flight experience for passengers.
