Introduction

School-age children are a group that is very vulnerable to various diseases, especially those caused by unhealthy behavior, such as the habit of not washing hands. Hand washing is a simple but very important action to prevent the spread of bacteria and infections. Unfortunately, a data released by the Ministry of Health of the Republic of Indonesia in 2013 shows that only 47.2% of Indonesian people are routinely washing hands, and more alarming, only 32.9% of people in North Sumatra who wash their hands in the right way. This alarming data highlights the need for effective interventions to improve hand washing habits among school-age children.

Background

The importance of hand washing cannot be overstated. Hand washing is a crucial habit that can prevent the spread of various diseases, including diarrhea, respiratory infections, and even life-threatening conditions such as sepsis. However, despite its importance, hand washing remains a neglected habit among many school-age children. In Indonesia, where the data shows that only a small percentage of people wash their hands regularly, the need for effective interventions to improve hand washing habits is more pressing than ever.

Methodology

This study aims to assess the effectiveness of hand washing education video in improving the ability of school-age children to carry out hand washing activities at the Al-Fityan Medan Foundation. The method used in this study is Quasi-experiment with pre-post design, where one group of interventions is used to test the effect of educational videos. Samples were taken using stratified random sampling techniques, which involved 49 children. Data analysis was carried out using the Wilcoxon test to test differences in capabilities before and after intervention.

Results

The results of this study showed a significant increase in the ability to wash hands on children after they watched the educational video. Before the intervention, most children were unable to wash their hands properly, but after watching videos, 34 out of 49 children showed an increase in category of capable. Statistical test results show the value of P = 0,000, which shows that there is a significant positive influence of the Handwashing Education video on the ability of children in washing hands.

Discussion

The results of this study confirm the importance of using educational media such as video to support the teaching of good health behavior to children. Educational videos not only provide information, but also add attractiveness and increase children's motivation to practice good habits. Therefore, it is recommended to make an educational video washing hands as one of the intervention tools in children's health programs in schools, especially in the Al-Fityan Medan Foundation, so that children better understand and apply the habit of washing hands properly.

Conclusion

Awareness and good knowledge of the importance of washing hands will be very helpful in preventing the spread of disease among children, as well as forming healthy habits that they will carry to adulthood. Through an interesting and educative approach like this, it is hoped that the number of children who apply the habit of washing hands correctly can be improved and overall public health can be maintained.

Recommendations

Based on the findings of this study, the following recommendations are made:

  • Use of educational videos as one of the intervention tools in children's health programs in schools, especially in the Al-Fityan Medan Foundation.
  • Development of educational materials that are attractive and easy to understand, such as videos, posters, and brochures.
  • Training of teachers and educators on the importance of hand washing and how to effectively teach children about this habit.
  • Monitoring and evaluation of the effectiveness of hand washing education programs in schools.

Limitations

This study has several limitations that should be noted. Firstly, the sample size was relatively small, which may limit the generalizability of the findings. Secondly, the study only focused on school-age children, and it is not clear whether the findings can be applied to other age groups. Finally, the study only used a quasi-experimental design, which may not be as robust as other research designs.

Future Research Directions

Future research should aim to build on the findings of this study by exploring the following research questions:

  • What are the most effective ways to teach children about hand washing?
  • How can educational videos be used to improve hand washing habits among children?
  • What are the long-term effects of hand washing education programs on children's health outcomes?

By addressing these research questions, future studies can provide more insights into the effectiveness of hand washing education programs and help to improve the health outcomes of children.
