Effectiveness of Counseling with Simulation and Lecture Methods on Improved Mother's Behavior in Providing Exclusive ASI at the Kembang Tanjong Health Center, Pidie Regency in 2015

Introduction

Exclusive breastfeeding during the first six months of a baby's life is a crucial aspect of infant nutrition and development. Not only does it provide complete nutrition, but it also plays a significant role in increasing the survival of the baby and supporting its growth and development. To support this effort, effective counseling for pregnant and lactating women is essential. This study aims to evaluate the effectiveness of counseling methods through lectures and simulations in increasing the behavior of mothers in providing exclusive breastfeeding at the Kembang Tanjong Health Center, Pidie Regency in 2015.

Background

Breastfeeding is a natural process that provides numerous benefits to both the mother and the baby. It is essential for the baby's growth and development, and it also has a positive impact on the mother's health. However, despite the numerous benefits of breastfeeding, many mothers in developing countries, including Indonesia, face challenges in providing exclusive breastfeeding to their babies. One of the main reasons for this is the lack of knowledge and skills among mothers and healthcare providers.

Methodology

This study is included in the category of quasi-experiment with pre-test and post-test groups. The population that became the target of the research was all pregnant women in the working area of the Kembang Tanjong Puskesmas, totaling 362 people. From this population, 78 people were chosen as research samples. Data was collected through direct interviews with respondents and analyzed using the paired t-test test at a 95% confidence level.

Results

The results of the analysis show that the lecture method succeeded in increasing the mother's knowledge and attitude in exclusive breastfeeding. Meanwhile, the simulation method is proven to be more effective in increasing the knowledge, attitudes, and skills of cadres in providing exclusive breastfeeding. The simulation method does not only equip mothers with knowledge but also practical skills needed in the breastfeeding process.

Discussion

Both of these counseling methods indicate that the selection of the right method can affect the desired results. The lecture method can be used to convey basic information about exclusive breastfeeding, while the simulation method emphasizes more direct practice, which allows mothers and cadres to interact and practice in providing exclusive breastfeeding. The results of this study suggest that a combination of both methods may be the most effective way to increase the behavior of mothers in providing exclusive breastfeeding.

Conclusion

The implementation of counseling with simulation and lecture methods is essential for increasing the behavior of mothers in providing exclusive breastfeeding. The results of this study suggest that the simulation method is more effective in increasing the knowledge, attitudes, and skills of cadres in providing exclusive breastfeeding. The lecture method, on the other hand, is more effective in increasing the mother's knowledge and attitude in exclusive breastfeeding.

Recommendations

Based on the results of this study, it is recommended that the Kembang Tanjong Health Center continue to conduct counseling with these two methods in turn. Counseling activities should involve pregnant women and breastfeed actively to find more information about the benefits of exclusive breastfeeding. This is important so that they have a better understanding and are able to apply the knowledge gained in everyday life.

Future Directions

The importance of the implementation of this counseling is not only limited in 2015, but must be a sustainable agenda to increase public awareness and knowledge about the importance of exclusive breastfeeding. With the support of all parties, we can jointly create an environment that supports mothers in providing exclusive breastfeeding to their babies.

Limitations

This study has several limitations. Firstly, the sample size was relatively small, which may limit the generalizability of the results. Secondly, the study only focused on the Kembang Tanjong Health Center, which may not be representative of other health centers in the region.

Implications

The results of this study have several implications for healthcare providers and policymakers. Firstly, it highlights the importance of counseling in increasing the behavior of mothers in providing exclusive breastfeeding. Secondly, it suggests that a combination of both simulation and lecture methods may be the most effective way to increase the behavior of mothers in providing exclusive breastfeeding.

Conclusion

In conclusion, this study highlights the effectiveness of counseling with simulation and lecture methods in increasing the behavior of mothers in providing exclusive breastfeeding. The results of this study suggest that the simulation method is more effective in increasing the knowledge, attitudes, and skills of cadres in providing exclusive breastfeeding, while the lecture method is more effective in increasing the mother's knowledge and attitude in exclusive breastfeeding. The implementation of counseling with simulation and lecture methods is essential for increasing the behavior of mothers in providing exclusive breastfeeding, and it should be continued as a sustainable agenda to increase public awareness and knowledge about the importance of exclusive breastfeeding.
