The Impact of Work Stress on Employee Performance in Medan Jaya Otobus Company (PO)

Introduction

Employee performance is a crucial factor that determines the success of an organization. In the context of the Medan Jaya Otobus Company (PO), understanding the relationship between work stress and employee performance is essential to improve overall productivity. This study aims to investigate the effect of work stress on employee performance, both simultaneously and partially, in the PO Medan Jaya Transport.

The Importance of Employee Performance

Employee performance is a critical aspect of any organization, as it directly affects the company's overall success. In the context of PO Medan Jaya, employee performance is influenced by various factors, including work stress. Work stress can be defined as the pressure faced by employees due to excessive work demands or not in accordance with individual capacity. This stress can affect concentration, productivity, and ultimately employee performance.

Research Methods

This study adopted a quantitative approach to the type of causal research. The research population consists of all permanent employees at PO Medan Jaya Transport, which amounts to 70 people. The sampling method used is saturated sampling, which means the entire population is used as a sample. Data analysis was carried out through several stages, including instrument tests (validity and reliability tests), simple linear regression analysis tests, normality tests, and hypothesis tests using the t test and the coefficient test of determination.

Research Results

From the results of the study, it was found that there was a positive influence between management information systems on employee performance. This can be seen from the t test, with the value of tcount (6,121) greater than ttable (1,995) at a significance level of 0.05. In addition, the analysis of the coefficient of determination shows that 35.5% of the performance variables can be explained by management information system variables. Conversely, 66.5% of employee performance is influenced by other variables that are not explained in this study.

The Impact of Work Stress on Employee Performance

Work stress can have a significant impact on employee performance. When employees experience high levels of stress, they may become less productive, less motivated, and less engaged in their work. This can lead to a range of negative consequences, including decreased job satisfaction, increased absenteeism, and turnover. In the context of PO Medan Jaya, effective work stress management is essential to create a positive and productive work environment.

Why Work Stress is Significant

There are several reasons why work stress can be significant. First, stress that is not managed can cause burnout, namely the condition of excessive emotional and physical fatigue, thereby reducing employee morale. Second, with a good management information system, employees can more easily access the information needed, thereby reducing unnecessary workloads. This has a positive impact on their performance.

Strategies for Managing Work Stress

Companies can implement various strategies to manage work stress, including:

  • Time management training: This can help employees prioritize tasks, manage their workload, and reduce stress.
  • Counseling: This can provide employees with a safe and confidential space to discuss their concerns and receive support.
  • Recreational activities: This can help employees relax, reduce stress, and improve their overall well-being.

Conclusion

In conclusion, the effect of work stress on employee performance in PO Medan Jaya is very significant. Therefore, companies need to implement effective strategies to manage work stress to achieve the optimal performance of each employee. These steps are expected to create a better work environment and increase employee loyalty and satisfaction.

Recommendations

Based on the findings of this study, the following recommendations are made:

  • PO Medan Jaya should implement a comprehensive work stress management program to reduce the negative impact of work stress on employee performance.
  • The company should provide training and development opportunities to help employees manage their workload, prioritize tasks, and reduce stress.
  • The company should establish a counseling service to provide employees with a safe and confidential space to discuss their concerns and receive support.
  • The company should provide recreational activities to help employees relax, reduce stress, and improve their overall well-being.

Limitations of the Study

This study has several limitations, including:

  • The study was conducted on a small sample size of 70 employees.
  • The study only investigated the effect of work stress on employee performance in PO Medan Jaya and did not generalize the findings to other organizations.
  • The study did not investigate the impact of other factors, such as job satisfaction, motivation, and engagement, on employee performance.

Future Research Directions

Future research should aim to investigate the impact of work stress on employee performance in other organizations, using a larger sample size and a more comprehensive research design. Additionally, future research should investigate the impact of other factors, such as job satisfaction, motivation, and engagement, on employee performance.
