Introduction

In today's fast-paced and competitive business environment, organizations are constantly seeking ways to improve employee performance and increase their overall productivity. One key aspect of achieving this goal is by fostering a positive and supportive work environment that encourages employees to exhibit behaviors that benefit the organization, known as Organizational Citizenship Behavior (PKO). However, the impact of work stress and organizational culture on PKO remains a topic of interest among researchers and practitioners alike.

This study aims to investigate the effect of work stress and organizational culture on PKO among employees of PT Pelabuhan Indonesia I (Persero), a leading port management company in Indonesia. By understanding the relationship between these factors, organizations can develop effective strategies to promote a positive work environment and increase employee PKO.

Methodology

This study employed an associative research design, involving all employees of the Human Resources Division (HR) of the Head Office of PT Pelabuhan Indonesia I (Persero), totaling 47 people. Data was collected through the distribution of questionnaires and analyzed using descriptive analysis techniques and multiple linear regression.

Results

The results of this study showed that work stress has a negative and significant influence on PKO. This means that the higher the level of work stress experienced by employees, the lower the level of their PKO. On the other hand, organizational culture has a positive and significant influence on PKO. That is, positive and supportive organizational culture will encourage employees to show behaviors that benefit the organization outside of their formal tasks.

Simultaneously, work stress and organizational culture have a significant influence on PKO. This shows that both of these factors play an important role in forming employee PKOs. This finding provides strong evidence that a pressure work environment can hamper PKOs, while positive organizational culture can be the main driver of PKO.

The Impact of Work Stress on PKO

Work stress can affect PKO through various mechanisms. When employees feel burdened with work pressure, they tend to feel tired, frustrated, and demotivated. This condition can lead to a decrease in commitment and loyalty to the organization, thus triggering a decline in PKO.

The Consequences of Work Stress on PKO

When employees experience high levels of work stress, they may exhibit behaviors that are detrimental to the organization, such as:

  • Decreased productivity and performance
  • Increased absenteeism and turnover
  • Reduced job satisfaction and engagement
  • Decreased commitment and loyalty to the organization

The Role of Organizational Culture in Increasing PKO

Positive and supportive organizational culture has an important role in increasing PKOs. When employees feel valued, supported, and have a sense of togetherness in the workplace, they are more likely to show behaviors that benefit the organization. Strong organizational culture can also help employees overcome work stress and improve their welfare.

The Benefits of Positive Organizational Culture

A positive and supportive organizational culture can lead to:

  • Increased job satisfaction and engagement
  • Improved productivity and performance
  • Reduced turnover and absenteeism
  • Increased commitment and loyalty to the organization
  • Improved employee well-being and welfare

Implications for PT Pelabuhan Indonesia I (Persero)

These findings have important implications for PT Pelabuhan Indonesia I (Persero) in an effort to increase employee PKOs. Companies need to pay attention to strategies to reduce work stress and build positive organizational culture. Some strategies that can be applied include:

This program can be in the form of stress management training, relaxation programs, and increasing the balance of work-life balance.

Increasing Commitment to Organizational Culture

The company needs to instill positive organizational values and give appreciation to employees who show behavior according to these values.

Building an Effective Communication System

Open and transparent communication can help employees understand company expectations and increase their confidence.

By implementing these strategies, PT Pelabuhan Indonesia I (Persero) can create a more positive work environment and encourage employees to show a higher PKO. This will have a positive impact on the company's overall performance.
