Effect of P Fertilizer Dose and the Composition of Planting Media on the Growth and Production of Cucumbers (Cucumis sativus L.)

Infertile soil problems often result in decreased plant productivity, including cucumis (cucumis sativus L.). Provision of P fertilizer (phosphorus) and the use of husk charcoal is an effective solution to overcome this problem. This study aims to determine how the effect of P fertilizer dose and the composition of planting media on the growth and production of cucumbers. The study was conducted on the land of the Faculty of Agriculture, University of North Sumatra in the period November 2018 to January 2019. The method used was a random design group with two factors tested, namely the dose of fertilizer P (0, 75, 150, and 225 kg/ha) and media composition Planting (Top Soil and Husk Charcoal ratio: 1: 0, 1: 1, and 2: 1).

Phosphorus plays a vital role in the process of photosynthesis, root formation, and energy production, all of which contribute to good growth. In this study, the fertilizer dose of 225 kg/ha gives the best results in terms of plant length. This shows that the fulfillment of phosphorus nutritional needs in cucumber plants can significantly increase its growth. Conversely, the best fruit diameter is produced at a dose of fertilizer 150 kg/ha. This shows that fertilizer doses that are too high can result in nutritional imbalances, which may affect the development of the fruit.

The optimal dose of P fertilizer is very important in supporting plant growth. The results of this study showed that the best plant length was obtained at the SP-36 fertilizer dose 225 kg/ha, while the best fruit diameter was achieved at a dose of 150 kg/ha. Planting media that gives the best plant length is the top soil and husk charcoal comparison (2: 1). However, the length of the fruit and the highest production per plant is obtained in the composition of the top soil planting media and the charcoal husk (1: 1).

The use of husk charcoal provides benefits in increasing aeration and water retention in the soil. Comparison of top soil planting media and husk charcoal (1: 1) turned out to be very effective to increase the length of the fruit and total production per plant. The study also found that there was no interaction between the treatment of P fertilizer dosage and the composition of planting media on the growth and production of cucumbers.
