Introduction

In today's digital age, social media has become an integral part of our lives, and its influence on our behavior and lifestyle cannot be ignored. Instagram, in particular, has become a popular platform among students, with millions of users worldwide. The University of North Sumatra is no exception, with a significant number of students using Instagram to interact, share moments, and follow the latest trends. However, the question remains: how does Instagram affect student lifestyle? This study aims to investigate the impact of Instagram on student lifestyle at the University of North Sumatra, using a quantitative correlational approach.

Methodology

This study was conducted from February 15 to February 20, 2019, and involved a population of 36,689 students at the University of North Sumatra. The sample size was determined using the Taro Yamane formula, with a total of 98 participants. The sampling technique used was a combination of proportional stratified sampling and purposive sampling. Data collection was carried out through library research and field research, and the data analysis method used included single table analysis, cross table analysis, and hypothesis testing using SPSS version 22.

Results

The results of the study showed a significant influence of 14% on a low relationship scale between the use of Instagram and student lifestyle. This indicates that Instagram plays a role in forming the lifestyle of students at the University of North Sumatra. While the influence may seem low, it is still relevant, and students need to be aware of the potential impact of Instagram on their lifestyle choices.

Discussion

The use of social media, especially Instagram, is increasing among students, and this is in line with the development of technology and increasing internet access. Students as young people often spend their time on social platforms to interact, share moments, and follow the latest trends. Instagram can provide the latest inspiration, information, and trends that can affect student lifestyle choices, such as fashion clothing, diet, and social activities.

However, excessive use of Instagram can also trigger negative impacts, such as excessive anxiety or social comparison. Student lifestyles are often influenced by many factors, including the social and cultural environment. With Instagram, students can explore various lifestyles from various groups, both local and global. However, they also need to be wise in filtering information obtained from social media so as not to get caught up in an unrealistic mindset.

Implications

The findings of this study have several implications for students, educational agencies, and policymakers. Firstly, students need to increase self-awareness in using social media and understand how this can shape their identity and lifestyle. With a good understanding of the use of Instagram, students can take advantage of social media in a more positive and constructive way.

Secondly, educational agencies and policymakers need to formulate a more wise use strategy for social media, taking into account the potential impact of social media on student lifestyle. This can include providing education and training on social media literacy, promoting responsible social media use, and monitoring the impact of social media on student well-being.

Conclusion

In conclusion, this study has shown that Instagram has a significant influence on student lifestyle at the University of North Sumatra. While the influence may seem low, it is still relevant, and students need to be aware of the potential impact of Instagram on their lifestyle choices. By increasing self-awareness and using social media in a more positive and constructive way, students can take advantage of social media to shape their identity and lifestyle.

Recommendations

Based on the findings of this study, the following recommendations are made:

  • Students need to increase self-awareness in using social media and understand how this can shape their identity and lifestyle.
  • Educational agencies and policymakers need to formulate a more wise use strategy for social media, taking into account the potential impact of social media on student lifestyle.
  • Social media literacy education and training should be provided to students to promote responsible social media use.
  • The impact of social media on student well-being should be monitored and addressed.

Limitations

This study has several limitations, including:

  • The sample size was relatively small, with only 98 participants.
  • The study was conducted at a single university, and the findings may not be generalizable to other universities or populations.
  • The study only investigated the impact of Instagram on student lifestyle and did not explore other social media platforms.

Future Research Directions

Future research should aim to investigate the impact of other social media platforms on student lifestyle, as well as the impact of social media on student well-being. Additionally, research should explore the effectiveness of social media literacy education and training in promoting responsible social media use.
