Introduction
In today's fast-paced and ever-changing business landscape, Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs) are constantly faced with the challenge of improving their products to meet the evolving needs of their customers. The rapid development of technology and changing market trends have created a competitive environment where SMEs must adapt and innovate to remain relevant. Innovation capability has emerged as a crucial factor in driving product improvement, and this study aims to explore the impact of innovation capability on product improvement at the USU Cikal Business Incubator Center.
Background
The University of North Sumatra (USU) Cikal Business Incubator Center is a hub for entrepreneurship and innovation, providing a platform for SMEs to develop and grow their businesses. The center offers various resources and support services to help entrepreneurs overcome the challenges of starting and running a business. However, despite the availability of these resources, many SMEs struggle to improve their products and remain competitive in the market. This study seeks to understand the role of innovation capability in driving product improvement at the USU Cikal Business Incubator Center.
Methodology
This study employed a quantitative approach with an association method to investigate the relationship between innovation capability and product improvement. The population of this study consisted of SME owners who are currently operating at the USU Cikal Business Incubator Center. A sample of 45 respondents was selected using the Slovin formula. The analysis methods used in this study included testing validity and reliability, simple linear regression analysis, and hypothesis testing through the t-test and the coefficient of determination. All tests were carried out using SPSS software version 21.
Results
The results of this study showed that innovation capability has a positive and significant influence on product improvement. In other words, the alternative hypothesis (H1) was accepted, while the null hypothesis (H0) was rejected. These findings indicate that innovation capability (X) contributes to product improvement (Y), but in a medium category, which means that even though there is a positive influence, the impact is not too dominant.

The findings of this study suggest that innovation capability is a critical factor in driving product improvement at the USU Cikal Business Incubator Center. SME owners who possess high levels of innovation capability are more likely to improve their products and remain competitive in the market. However, it is essential to note that there are other factors outside of innovation capability that also affect the improvement of SME products.
