Introduction

Catfish is one of the most important fisheries commodities in Indonesia, known for its economic value and high demand in the market. With the increasing needs of the community for catfish, efficient and effective cultivation businesses are needed. One key aspect in catfish farming is the fulfillment of feed, especially fish larvae. This study was conducted at UPTD Tuntung Fish Seed Center in April to May 2018, with the aim of investigating the influence of the frequency of natural feeding of silk worms (Tubifex sp.) On the growth and survival of catfish larvae.

Background of the Study

Catfish farming is a significant industry in Indonesia, providing employment and income for many people. However, the success of catfish farming depends on various factors, including the quality of feed, water quality, and management practices. Fish larvae are particularly vulnerable to nutritional deficiencies, which can affect their growth and survival. Natural feeding, such as using silk worms (Tubifex sp.), is a common practice in fish farming, but the optimal frequency of feeding is still not well understood.

Methodology

This study applied a complete random design (RAL) with three different treatments and each was repeated three times. The treatment consists of P1 (natural feeding 3 times a day), P2 (4 times a day), and P3 (5 times a day). Data collection is carried out to analyze the growth and survival of catfish larvae based on the treatment applied. Data analysis is carried out using variance analysis (ANOVA) and if there are significant differences, it will be continued with the smallest real difference test (BNT).

Results

The results showed that the frequency of different feeding had a very significant effect on the growth of catfish larvae. In this case, the treatment of P3, which is feeding 5 times a day, is proven to be the most effective. Catfish larvae that are treated to this treatment experience a length of up to 3.6 cm and an increase in weight of 928 mg. However, this study also found that the frequency of feeding did not show a significant effect on the survival of the larvae.

Discussion

The frequency of feeding is an important factor in fish farming that greatly affects growth. Feeding more often allows catfish larvae to get adequate nutritional intake, thus encouraging optimal growth. Silk worms (Tubifex sp.) Known as natural feed that is rich in protein and nutrients, which are needed by fish larvae. However, the results of the study showed that although larvae growth increased with a higher feeding frequency, this had no significant effect on survival. This can be influenced by various factors such as water quality, larvae density, and feed management and the environment. Therefore, it is important for farmers to pay attention to all aspects of cultivation, not just focus on feed.

Conclusion

This research provides important insights for fisheries practitioners about the importance of determining the frequency of appropriate feeding to support the growth of catfish larvae. The application of the results of this study is expected to increase productivity and efficiency in catfish farming in Indonesia. In the long run, this will not only meet market needs but also improve the welfare of the people who depend on the fishery industry.

Recommendations

Based on the findings of this study, the following recommendations are made:
