Introduction
Non-wood forest products (HHBK) play a vital role in the lives of communities surrounding forests. In the village of Marancar Godang, Marancar District, South Tapanuli Regency, the community utilizes HHBK for various needs such as food, traditional medicine, and other daily necessities. This study aims to explore more deeply about the economic value and HHBK's contribution to the income of the local community. The methods applied in this study include in-depth interviews with local residents and direct surveys in the field, with a total of 65 respondents. The study was conducted in January to February 2019.
The Importance of Non-Wood Forest Products (HHBK)
HHBK have a significant impact on the community's income and livelihood. The products are not only a source of income but also an integral part of the community's culture and traditions. For example, the use of palm sugar is not only profitable in terms of economy but also plays a role in traditional practices that have taken place for generations. The community's reliance on HHBK is a testament to the importance of sustainable forest management and the need to conserve these valuable resources.
Economic Value of HHBK
The study found that there were seven types of HHBK used by the community, namely rubber, palm, chocolate, sweet skin, jengkol, candlenut, and areca nut. Of the seven types of products, areca nut became a product with the highest economic value, reaching 19.52%. This is a significant finding, as it highlights the potential for HHBK to contribute to the community's income. However, it is essential to note that the economic value of HHBK can be increased through better processing techniques and broader marketing.
Contribution of HHBK to Community Income
The study found that the contribution of HHBK to the income of the people of Marancar Godang Village is classified as moderate, with a contribution figure of 53.04% or equivalent to Rp 2,441,416,000 per year. This is a significant contribution, and it highlights the importance of HHBK in the community's economy. However, it is essential to note that the potential increase in added value is still very wide open. With the application of better processing techniques and broader marketing, the community can increase the selling value of their products.
