Differences in the Health Behavior of the Oral Cavity on the Quality of Life of Children Aged 15-18 Years in Sultan Iskandar Muda High School and SMA Negeri 15 Medan

Introduction

The health of the oral cavity is a crucial aspect that plays a significant role in the quality of life, especially for adolescents. In the school environment, such as in Sultan Iskandar Muda High School and SMA Negeri 15 Medan, bad oral health cavity behavior can have a serious impact on the learning process, daily activities, and overall well-being. It is essential to understand that oral health not only has a physical impact but also affects the ability to socialize adolescents. This study aims to analyze the relationships and differences in the health behavior of the oral cavity and the quality of life in both schools.

Background

The importance of oral health cannot be overstated, especially for adolescents. A healthy oral cavity is essential for proper nutrition, self-esteem, and overall quality of life. However, many adolescents neglect their oral health, leading to various problems such as tooth decay, gum disease, and bad breath. These issues can interfere with the learning process, affect daily activities, and ultimately cause painful and unkempt tooth problems.

In the school environment, oral health education is crucial to promote good oral hygiene practices among students. Schools can play a significant role in educating students about the importance of oral health and providing them with the necessary skills to maintain good oral hygiene. However, the effectiveness of oral health education in schools depends on various factors, including the availability of resources, the quality of education, and the level of awareness among students and parents.

Methodology

This study used an analytic survey with a cross-sectional design to collect data from 202 teenagers aged 15-18 years who have good general health. The study was conducted in two schools: Sultan Iskandar Muda High School and SMA Negeri 15 Medan. The data were collected using a questionnaire that assessed the health behavior of the oral cavity and the quality of life of the students.

Research Findings

The results of the analysis using the Chi-Square test at Sultan Iskandar Muda High School showed a significant relationship between the health behavior of the oral cavity and the quality of life throughout the domain (p = 0.0001). This indicates that healthy behavior in caring for the oral cavity has a positive effect on various aspects of the life of adolescents in this school.

In SMA Negeri 15 Medan, the results of the Chi-Square test also showed a significant relationship between the health behavior of the oral cavity with the quality of life, especially in social domains, learning, smiling, emotional conditions, and sleep (p < 0.05). However, the domain of eating, speaking, and cleaning teeth shows insignificant results (P > 0.05). This can be interpreted that although there is a positive relationship between oral health and some aspects of quality of life, there are areas that still need to be considered and improved.

Furthermore, the T-Independent test revealed a significant difference in the quality of life between students in SMA Negeri 15 Medan and Sultan Iskandar Muda High School (P = 0.01). This shows that the approach and attention to the health of the oral cavity can vary between educational institutions, which have an impact on the quality of life of students.

Analysis and Implications

From the results of this study, it appears that good oral cavity health behavior contributes to a better quality of life in adolescents. This highlights the importance of health education in schools, so students are more aware of the importance of maintaining oral health. The socialization and intervention program that educates students on how to care for teeth and mouth good can be the right first step.

The difference between Sultan Iskandar Muda High School and Public High School 15 Medan may be influenced by various factors, including educational resources, existing health programs, and awareness of parents and students about oral health. Therefore, collaboration efforts between schools, parents, and local health offices are needed to improve the health behavior of the oral cavity among adolescents.

Conclusion

Oral health should be a serious concern among adolescents, because the impact is not only physical but also emotional and social. Early prevention efforts can help create a healthier young generation and have a better quality of life. This study highlights the importance of oral health education in schools and the need for collaboration between schools, parents, and local health offices to improve the health behavior of the oral cavity among adolescents.
