Introduction

The anxiety experienced by Nursing Professional students when preparing for competency examinations is increasing after the issuance of a circular stating that the competency test is the main requirement to be able to graduate and graduate. This situation creates not small pressure for students, so they must face mental and academic challenges simultaneously. The Faculty of Nursing, University of North Sumatra, is one of the institutions that has been affected by this situation. As a result, it is essential to understand the level of anxiety experienced by Nursing Professional students at this faculty, especially those registered in 2021.

Background

The competency test is a crucial requirement for Nursing Professional students to graduate and become competent nurses. However, the pressure to pass this test can lead to increased anxiety levels among students. Anxiety is a common mental health issue that can have a significant impact on students' academic performance and overall well-being. If left untreated, anxiety can develop into severe anxiety or even panic attacks, which can have serious consequences for students' mental health.

Methodology

This study aimed to provide a clear picture of the level of anxiety of Nursing Professional students at the Faculty of Nursing, University of North Sumatra. The population studied was 130 Nursing Professional students, with a number of samples taken as many as 98 students. The sampling technique used was simple random sampling, which allows random sampling to get representative results. Data collection was carried out using the Anxpital Anxiety and Depression Scale (HADS) anxiety questionnaire, which was effective in measuring the level of anxiety in individuals.

Results

The results showed that 7 students (7.1%) did not experience anxiety at all. Meanwhile, 56 students (57.1%) were in the category of light anxiety, 32 students (32.7%) at the level of moderate anxiety, and 3 students (3.1%) experienced a heavy anxiety level. Based on this data, it can be concluded that the majority of Nursing profession students are in the category of light anxiety, although there are some who feel anxiety in a higher level.

Discussion

Sustainable anxiety can have a serious negative impact on students, especially in the context of competency tests. Although many of those who only experience mild anxiety, it is essential to remember that if the condition is left without proper treatment, it can develop into severe anxiety or even panic attacks. Therefore, it is very important for the faculties and lecturers to provide adequate support, such as counseling and stress management programs, to help students overcome their anxiety.

Conclusion

In conclusion, although the level of anxiety of Nursing Professional students at the Faculty of Nursing, University of North Sumatra is currently dominated by mild categories, prevention and intervention steps need to be done to prevent excessive increase in anxiety. With more attention to students' mental health, it is hoped that they can be better prepared to face competency tests and achieve success in their education.

Recommendations

Based on the findings of this study, the following recommendations are made:

  • The Faculty of Nursing, University of North Sumatra, should provide adequate support to students, such as counseling and stress management programs, to help them overcome their anxiety.
  • The faculty should also provide regular updates and information about the competency test to help students prepare and reduce their anxiety levels.
  • The faculty should consider implementing a mental health support system for students, which can include access to counseling services, stress management programs, and other forms of support.
  • The faculty should also consider providing incentives for students who perform well in the competency test, such as scholarships or other forms of recognition.

Limitations

This study has several limitations, including:

  • The sample size was relatively small, which may not be representative of the entire population of Nursing Professional students at the Faculty of Nursing, University of North Sumatra.
