Research Methods

This study used a descriptive method with a cross-sectional approach to investigate the level of bacterial and fungal contamination in lipstick samples used by female students of the Faculty of Medicine, University of North Sumatra. The sample consisted of lipstick that had been used by students for less than 12 months, as well as new lipstick with the same brand. The purpose of this study was to identify the number and type of microorganism contamination and antimicrobial sensitivity of pathogenic bacteria found in lipstick.

The sampling method used in this study was the Consecutive Sampling method, where samples were collected in a consecutive manner. The research results were analyzed manually to identify the type and amount of microorganism contamination.

Research Results

The results of this study showed that of the total 35 samples tested, as many as 30 samples (85.7%) were contaminated by microorganisms with an amount that exceeded the specified limit. The four species of bacteria that were identified were Bacillus sp., Staphylococcus epidermidis, Staphylococcus aureus, and Corynebacterium sp. The most common species found was Bacillus sp., which accounted for 48.6% of the total samples.

What is more worrying is that the detected Staphylococcus aureus shows a pattern of resistance to seven types of antibiotics, including ampicillin, cefoxitine, chloramphenicol, clindamycin, ciprofloxacin, erythromycin, and vancomycin. This finding is a serious concern for the health of users, as it suggests that the microorganisms found in lipstick may be resistant to treatment.

The results of this study indicate that there is an amount of microorganism contamination that exceeds the safe limit and also the discovery of pathogenic microorganisms that have resistance to several types of antibiotics in the lipstick used. This finding is a serious concern for the health of users, given the use of contaminated lipstick can potentially cause infections that are difficult to treat.
