Introduction

The COVID-19 pandemic has had a significant impact on the lives of students worldwide, particularly in terms of their ability to adjust to new environments and cultures. As students return to campus, they face various social and academic challenges that can lead to culture shock. Understanding the relationship between adjustment and culture shock is crucial for educational institutions to design effective support programs for students. In this study, we employed Covariance-Based Structural Equation Modeling (CB-SEM) to analyze the relationship between adjustment and culture shock among Forestry students at the University of North Sumatra.

Background

Structural Equation Modeling (SEM) is a multivariate statistical method that allows researchers to analyze the causal relationship between indicator variables and latent variables, as well as the interaction between latent variables themselves. CB-SEM is a specific approach within SEM that focuses on estimating the covariance between variables. In this study, we used the estimated maximum likelihood (ML) method to obtain more accurate results.

Methodology

This study aimed to identify the correlation rate and significance between students' adjustments and their cultural shock. A survey was conducted on 200 Forestry students at the University of North Sumatra, consisting of 72 male students and 128 female students. The respondents were divided into two generations: 91 respondents from the class of 2021 and 109 respondents from the class of 2022.

Results

The results of the analysis showed that the affective latent variable can be described by 40% by the latent and extroverted latent variables, while the remaining 60% is influenced by other variables. In addition, the latent behavior variable has an explanation value of 29% derived from affective latent variables, with the remaining 71% explained by other factors. Cognitive latent variables recorded can be explained by 48% by affective, behavior, and extroverted latent variables, while the remaining 52% comes from other variables.

Discussion

The results of the analysis show that the relationship between self-adjustment and culture shock among Forestry students at the University of North Sumatra has a medium size. This means there is a significant relationship, although not too strong, between the ability of students to adjust and the level of culture shock they feel. The model used in this study also shows a high Goodness of Fit (GOF), which indicates that the model is in accordance with the data obtained.

Implications

This analysis has an important value in understanding the impact of the Pandemi Covid-19 on student experience in adapting to a new environment. By knowing how much the influence of adjustment on culture shock, educational institutions can design more effective support programs to help students face social and academic challenges after returning to campus. In addition, this research can be a reference for further researchers who want to explore more deeply about aspects of adjustment and their impact on students, especially in the post-Pandemic context.

Conclusion

The use of Covariance-Based Structural Equation Modeling as an analysis tool in this study provides valuable insights about the social dynamics faced by students, and enables stakeholders to formulate better strategies in supporting the process of adjusting students in this challenging period. The findings of this study can contribute to the development of more effective support programs for students, particularly in the post-Pandemic context.

Recommendations

Based on the findings of this study, we recommend that educational institutions design support programs that focus on helping students adjust to new environments and cultures. These programs should include activities that promote social interaction, cultural awareness, and academic support. Finally, the study only analyzed the relationship between adjustment and culture shock, and did not explore other factors that may influence student adjustment.
