The Impact of Dancing Exercises on Menstrual Pain: A Comparative Study
Introduction
Menstrual pain, also known as dysmenorrhoea, is a common problem experienced by many women worldwide. It is often characterized by pain before or during menstruation due to uterine muscle spasms. While pharmacological treatments are available to alleviate this pain, non-pharmacological approaches such as physical activity have also been shown to be effective. One such approach is dancing exercises, which not only reduces stress but also stimulates endorphins, providing a sense of comfort for individuals. This study aims to compare the degree of menstrual pain between female students who regularly practice dancing exercises and those who do not.
Background
Dysmenorrhoea is a significant problem that affects many women, often interfering with their daily activities. While various treatments are available, finding a holistic alternative that is both effective and enjoyable is crucial. Physical activity, such as dancing exercises, has been shown to have a positive impact on menstrual health. Dancing not only increases physical fitness but also mental and emotional aspects, providing a sense of well-being and reducing stress.
Methodology
This study employed a comparative design, involving two groups of female students: those who regularly practice dancing exercises and those who do not. The population consisted of 160 female students, with 62 selected respondents using purposive sampling techniques. Data collection was carried out through questionnaires, filling informed consent, and collecting demographic data. The data collection was carried out in March 2020, before the lockdown at the University of North Sumatra due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
Results
The results of this study showed a significant effect of physical activity "dancing exercises" on menstrual disorders (dysmenorrhoea), with a significance value (P) of 0.000. This value means p < α, where α is regulated at 0.05. These results indicate that students who regularly do dancing exercises tend to experience a lower degree of menstrual pain compared to those who do not do these physical activity.
Discussion
This study provides an important insight into the impact of physical activity on menstrual health. The results of this study show that dancing exercises can reduce menstrual pain, providing a more holistic alternative treatment. By participating in fun activities such as dancing, women can feel the additional benefits of positive social interaction, improve mood, and reduce stress that contributes to pain.
Conclusion
In conclusion, this study highlights the importance of physical activity in reducing menstrual pain. Dancing exercises not only increase physical fitness but also mental and emotional aspects, providing a sense of well-being and reducing stress. While every woman may have different experiences related to dysmenorrhoea, this research certainly opens space for further studies on various types of other physical activity and its effect on menstrual health.
Recommendations
Based on the findings of this study, the following recommendations are made:
- Encourage women to engage in physical activity, such as dancing exercises, to reduce menstrual pain.
- Provide education and awareness on the benefits of physical activity on menstrual health.
- Conduct further studies on various types of physical activity and its effect on menstrual health.
- Develop and implement programs that promote physical activity and reduce menstrual pain.
Limitations
This study has several limitations, including:
- The sample size was relatively small, which may limit the generalizability of the findings.
- The study only focused on dancing exercises, and other types of physical activity were not explored.
- The study did not control for other factors that may influence menstrual pain, such as diet and lifestyle.
Future Directions
Future studies should aim to:
- Explore the effects of other types of physical activity on menstrual health.
- Investigate the mechanisms by which physical activity reduces menstrual pain.
- Develop and implement programs that promote physical activity and reduce menstrual pain.
