Clay Mask Preparation Formulation Containing Green Tea Extract (Camellia Sinensis L.) as Anti-Aging

Introduction

As we age, our skin undergoes various changes that can lead to the appearance of fine lines, wrinkles, and age spots. One of the most effective ways to combat these signs of aging is through the use of anti-aging skincare products. In recent years, there has been a growing interest in the use of natural ingredients in cosmetics, particularly those that are rich in antioxidants and have anti-inflammatory properties. Green tea extract (Camellia Sinensis L.) is one such ingredient that has been widely studied for its potential anti-aging benefits.

The Benefits of Green Tea Extract

Green tea extract is a rich source of polyphenols, particularly catechins, which are known for their antioxidant properties. These compounds have been shown to have anti-inflammatory and anti-cancer properties, making them an attractive ingredient for use in skincare products. In addition to its antioxidant properties, green tea extract has also been shown to have anti-aging benefits, including reducing the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles, improving skin elasticity, and reducing the appearance of age spots.

The Role of Clay Masks in Skincare

Clay masks have been used for centuries as a natural remedy for a variety of skin concerns, including acne, blackheads, and hyperpigmentation. They work by drawing out impurities and excess oil from the skin, leaving it feeling clean and refreshed. In addition to their purifying properties, clay masks can also help to improve the appearance of the skin by reducing the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles and improving skin elasticity.

The Formulation of Clay Mask Preparations Containing Green Tea Extract

In this study, we aimed to develop clay mask preparations that contain green tea extract and test their effectiveness as an anti-aging agent. We formulated five different variants of clay mask preparations, each with a different concentration of green tea extract: 2.5% (F1), 5% (F2), 7.5% (F3), 10% (F4), and one control formula without extract (F0/blank). We evaluated the stability, homogeneity, pH, skin irritation potential, drying time, and anti-aging effectiveness of each formula using skin analyzer devices.

Research Methods

To obtain the green tea extract, we used a maceration process with 96% ethanol solvent. We then tested both the simplicia and extract to determine their characteristics and phytochemical screening. We evaluated the stability, homogeneity, pH, skin irritation potential, drying time, and anti-aging effectiveness of each formula using skin analyzer devices.

Research Results

Our results showed that the simplicia and green tea extract met the requirements in the characteristic test. The simplicia was detected to contain alkaloids, flavonoids, glycosides, saponins, tannins, and steroids/triterpenoids, which are bioactive compounds beneficial for skin health. We also found that the clay mask preparations with green tea extracts showed good homogeneity, pH ranging from 5.8-6.2, stable for 12 weeks of storage, did not cause irritation to the skin, and had a drying time between 5.3 to 16.3 minutes.

Anti-Aging Effectiveness

After four weeks of treatment, we found that all the formulas showed a significant anti-aging effect compared to the control formula (blank). Increased water content and decreased size of pores, stains, and wrinkles were more clearly visible on clay masks with a concentration of 10% (F4) compared to other formulas and blanks.

Conclusion

Based on our results, we can conclude that a clay mask containing green tea extract shows better anti-aging effectiveness during four weeks of treatment when compared to the blank formula. The F4 formula (10% concentration) gives the best results in terms of increasing skin moisture and reducing signs of aging such as wrinkles and stains, making it an effective choice in anti-aging skin care.

Future Directions

With this study, it is expected that the use of natural ingredients such as green tea extract in cosmetics can continue to be developed to provide more optimal health benefits for the skin. Further studies are needed to explore the potential benefits of green tea extract in skincare products and to develop more effective and safe formulations.
