Introduction

Salak plants (Salacca sp) are one of the horticultural commodities that have high economic value and are known for their typical fruit characteristics. In Pakkat District, Humbang Hasundutan Regency, research on the morphological character of salak plants was conducted by Andi P. Simanullang under the guidance of Dr. Ir. Emmy Harso Karso M.Sc. and Ir. Revandy I. M. Damanik M.Sc., M.Sc., Ph.D. This study took place from February to March 2020 and aimed to identify the diversity of salak plant morphology in the area. Understanding the morphological characteristics of salak plants is crucial for the development of better varieties in the future.

The Importance of Genetic Diversity

Genetic diversity is a key factor in the assembly of superior varieties of salak plants. Indonesia has a variety of salak species with varied characteristics, both those that are already known and still mysterious. Understanding and documenting morphological diversity is very important for the development of better varieties in the future. In addition, by knowing the morphological characteristics, we can evaluate the potential of salak plants to be planted in various regions, including in Pakkat. Genetic diversity is a vital component in the development of sustainable agriculture.

Research Methodology

In this study, the authors used descriptive methods with guidelines based on Minister of Agriculture Decree No. 12/KPTS/SR.130/D/8/2019. This descriptive method is designed to explore and describe the morphological characteristics of salak in Pakkat District, such as leaf shape, fruit size, skin color, and others. Data collection was carried out by direct observation of salak samples taken from various locations in Pakkat. The research methodology used in this study is a crucial step in understanding the morphological characteristics of salak plants.

Research Result

The results showed a broad diversity of the morphological characters tested. From the data obtained, the value of the closest kinship is detected at 2,491 between samples of B2S7 and F2S27. Meanwhile, the value of the farthest kinship was recorded at 8,022 between the samples of A1S1 and F2S27. These results reflect how much variations in existing salak species, which can be the basis for the development of superior varieties in the future. The research result highlights the importance of understanding the morphological characteristics of salak plants.
