Characterization and Diversity of Qualitative and Quantitative Properties of Etawa Peranakan Goat in Serdang Bedagai Regency
Introduction
The Etawa Peranakan Goat is a unique and valuable breed found in Serdang Bedagai Regency, North Sumatra. This breed has been developed through the genetic mixture of Etawa and other breeds, resulting in a distinct set of characteristics and properties. In this study, we aim to characterize and diversify the qualitative and quantitative properties of Etawa Peranakan Goats in Serdang Bedagai Regency, with the goal of understanding their potential as a productive livestock.
Methodology
This study was conducted in six sub-districts with three plains (high, medium, and low) in Serdang Bedagai Regency. A total of 182 adult goats (male and female) were involved in the research. The research team observed 10 properties, including head length, head width, head height, chest width, shoulder height, body weight, chest circumference, body length, fur color, and face shape, ears, horns, and back. Data were analyzed descriptively and correlanceally using the SPSS 16 program.
Research Results
Qualitative Properties
The genetic mixture of Etawa Peranakan Goats with other breeds can be seen in the face shape, which is dominated by flat (58%), horned horns (87%), half dangling ears (60%), and straight back (74%). Only 24% of goats have brown and white feathers, according to SNI standards. These results indicate that the Etawa Peranakan Goat has a unique set of qualitative properties that are influenced by its genetic makeup.
Quantitative Properties
In terms of quantitative properties, body weight, body length, and shoulder height in male and female goats have reached SNI standards. The female chest circumference is also in accordance with the standard, but the male goat's chest circumference is lower than the standard. The diversity of quantitative properties ranges from 5-15%, showing moderate diversity. There is a very high correlation, even perfect, between body weight and chest circumference. These results indicate that the Etawa Peranakan Goat has a strong potential for increased production.
Further Analysis
The results of this study indicate that the Etawa Peranakan Goat in Serdang Bedagai has good potential as a productive livestock. Despite genetic mixing, most qualitative properties still meet the standards. Quantitative properties, especially body weight and chest circumference, also show positive results and show the potential for increased production.
Recommendation
Based on the results of this study, we recommend the following:
*** Tight Selection: ** It is essential to make strict selection of Etawa Peranakan Goats by taking into account SNI standards, especially for the color of fur, body shape, and body weight. The right selection will help maintain genetic quality and increase livestock productivity.
*** Nursery Program: ** A structured nursery program can help improve the genetic quality of Etawa Peranakan Goats, especially in increasing the proportion of goats with brown and white feathers.
*** Increased Feed and Management: ** Giving nutritious feed and good maintenance management will help increase body weight and chest circumference, especially in male goats.
Conclusion
This study shows that the Etawa Peranakan Goat in Serdang Bedagai has great potential as a productive livestock. With strict selection efforts, structured nursery programs, and increasing feed and management, this potential can be optimized to support the development of livestock in the area.

The Etawa Peranakan Goat has the potential to become a major contributor to the local economy, providing a source of income for farmers and supporting the development of the livestock industry. Furthermore, the study highlights the importance of maintaining genetic quality and increasing production through proper selection, nursery programs, and feed and management practices.
Limitations
This study has several limitations that should be noted. Firstly, the sample size was relatively small, and further research is needed to confirm the results. Secondly, the study only focused on the Etawa Peranakan Goat and did not consider other breeds or factors that may influence the results. Finally, the study was conducted in a specific region and may not be generalizable to other areas.
