Introduction
Peanuts (Arachis hypogaea L.) are one of the most important commodities in the world of agriculture, serving as a source of vegetable protein and an industrial raw material. The selection of suitable peanut varieties is crucial to increase agricultural productivity, especially in regions with varying soil and climate conditions. This study aimed to investigate the characteristics of several peanut varieties, including giraffe, deer, Bima, lion, and Sihobuk, to determine their potential and suitability for cultivation in North Sumatra.
Research Methodology
The study was conducted in the experimental land of the Faculty of Agriculture, University of North Sumatra, from August to November 2005. A randomized block design with five replications was used to ensure accurate results. The evaluated peanut varieties were giraffe, deer, Bima, lion, and Sihobuk. The study focused on several characteristic parameters, including plant height, number of branches, flowering age, number of ginofora, vegetative and generative phases, number of pods per sample and per plot, and seed weight per plot.
Results
The results of the study showed that the mouse deer variety had the highest potential with an average seed weight of 122.02 grams per plot, while the Bima variety had the lowest yield, with an average seed weight of 61.28 grams per plot. The study also analyzed the heritability value of various characteristic parameters. The results indicated that the seed weight parameter per plot had the lowest heritability value, while parameters such as the number of branches, flowering age, number of ginofora, vegetative and generative phases, and number of pods per sample and per plot had moderate heritability values. On the other hand, plant height had the highest heritability value.
