Analysis Of The Use Of Electronic Information Resources By Students Of The Faculty Of Mathematics And Natural Sciences, University Of North Sumatra
Introduction
The rapid advancement of technology has led to the widespread use of electronic information resources in various fields, including education. The Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences (MIPA) at the University of North Sumatra is no exception, with students increasingly relying on electronic resources for learning and research purposes. However, there is a need to understand the extent of their utilization and the factors that influence their use. This study aims to analyze the use of electronic information resources by students of the Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences, University of North Sumatra.
Methodology
This study employed a descriptive method to evaluate the use of electronic information resources by students of the Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences, University of North Sumatra. The population studied consisted of all students of the faculty, totaling 1,324 people. To facilitate research, the authors took samples using the Slovin formula, which produced 93 samples. Data collection was carried out through a questionnaire, and then the data was processed and presented in the form of frequency distribution. Data interpretation was carried out based on the percentage of each answer given by the respondent.
Results
The results of this study showed that the utilization of electronic information resources by Mathematics and Natural Sciences students was quite significant. The frequency of use of electronic information resources reached 51.25%, which shows that more than half of the respondents utilized this resource. In addition, the purpose of using electronic information resources was also quite high, with a percentage of 57.29%. This reflects that students use these resources for learning and research purposes. However, the pattern of utilization of electronic information resources showed a lower number, which was 47.44%, which shows the existence of space to increase the habit of using electronic resources among students.
Discussion
Further analysis of the results of this study indicates a good awareness among students on the importance of electronic information resources. However, there is a need to develop more effective strategies to improve utilization patterns, such as workshops or training related to information technology. Thus, students are expected to better understand how to use various electronic resources more optimally.
Conclusion
In conclusion, this research provides a clear picture of the utilization of electronic information resources among students of the Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences, University of North Sumatra. With the results showing a fairly good use, but there is still an opportunity for improvement, the faculty and university need to take proactive steps to support the development of students' skills in using information technology. The implementation of training programs and improving electronic library facilities can be a good first step to increase information literacy among students.
Implications for Practice
The findings of this study have several implications for practice. Firstly, the faculty and university need to provide more effective training programs to improve students' skills in using electronic information resources. Secondly, the electronic library facilities need to be improved to provide students with better access to electronic resources. Finally, the faculty and university need to develop more effective strategies to promote the use of electronic information resources among students.
Limitations of the Study
This study has several limitations. Firstly, the sample size was relatively small, which may not be representative of the entire population. Secondly, the study only focused on students of the Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences, University of North Sumatra, which may not be generalizable to other faculties or universities. Finally, the study only analyzed the use of electronic information resources and did not consider other factors that may influence their use.
Future Research Directions
Future research directions include:
- Conducting a larger-scale study to analyze the use of electronic information resources among students of other faculties and universities.
- Investigating the factors that influence the use of electronic information resources among students, such as motivation, self-efficacy, and access to technology.
- Developing more effective strategies to promote the use of electronic information resources among students, such as workshops, training programs, and online resources.
Recommendations for the Faculty and University
Based on the findings of this study, the following recommendations are made for the faculty and university:
- Provide more effective training programs to improve students' skills in using electronic information resources.
- Improve electronic library facilities to provide students with better access to electronic resources.
- Develop more effective strategies to promote the use of electronic information resources among students.
- Conduct regular surveys to monitor the use of electronic information resources among students and identify areas for improvement.
Conclusion
In conclusion, this study provides a clear picture of the utilization of electronic information resources among students of the Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences, University of North Sumatra. The findings suggest that students are aware of the importance of electronic information resources, but there is still a need to develop more effective strategies to improve utilization patterns. The faculty and university need to take proactive steps to support the development of students' skills in using information technology. The implementation of training programs and improving electronic library facilities can be a good first step to increase information literacy among students.
