However, from 2006 to 2010, the contribution of the industrial sector to the Gross Regional Domestic Product (GRDP) in the North Medan District sub-district experienced a decline trend. This study aims to analyze the role of the industrial sector in supporting the economy of Medan City, using descriptive analysis methods and multiple linear regression analysis.

Background

Medan City is the capital of North Sumatra Province, Indonesia, and is one of the largest cities in the country. The city has a population of over 2.5 million people and is a major economic hub in the region. The results of this study showed that although there was a decrease in the contribution of the industrial sector to the GRDP, the northern Medan region still had significant economic potential. Data shows that the donation of the GRDP from this region plays an important role in the formation of the total GRDP of Medan City. Districts that can be prioritized for the development of the industrial sector are Medan Deli, Medan Labuhan, and Medan Marelan. These three sub-districts are the base sector that shows a fairly good economic power and has a positive effect on the economic growth of the northern Medan region.

Discussion

The contribution of the industrial sector in Medan Deli, Medan Labuhan, and Medan Marelan had a positive impact on the economy of Medan City. This shows that industrial development in these areas must be a priority for the government and local developers to improve the welfare of the community. Conversely, the contribution of the industrial sector in Medan Belawan actually has a negative impact, which shows that there needs to be an evaluation and improvement of industrial strategies in this region in order to be able to contribute better to the economy as a whole.

In conclusion, the northern part of Medan has great potential in the economy of the city of Medan, especially through the industrial sector. Focus on the development of this sector in sub-districts that show positive contributions and make improvements in areas that are less contributing it will be very important to improve the welfare of the community and overall economic growth.
