Introduction

This study focuses on Kelurahan Junya, Medan Marelan District, to analyze food consumption in terms of quantity and food security of poor households. The research aims to identify the challenges faced by these households and provide recommendations for improving their food security.
Methodology
The Purposive Area Sampling method was used to determine the research area, and descriptive analysis and quantitative analysis were applied to describe the findings. The study collected data on food consumption patterns, including the quantity and quality of food consumed by poor households in the area.
Results
The results of the study showed that various food groups, such as grains, tubers, animal food, and vegetables and fruit, experience consumption below the ideal weight. Conversely, consumption of food groups such as nuts, oil, fat, and sugar exceeds the ideal number. This indicates that poor households in the village tend to rely on less nutritious food and consume more high-calorie foods but are low in nutrition.
Specifically, the actual energy consumption of poor households in this area reaches 1494.4 kcal per capita per day. The level of energy consumption (TKE) which only 69.5% shows an energy deficit, which can have a negative impact on the health and productivity of the community. Meanwhile, the consumption of actual protein recorded is only 29.6 grams per capita per day, with a protein consumption level (TKP) of 51.9%, also in the deficit category. This condition indicates that many families in the village are involved in facing major challenges in meeting their basic nutritional needs.
Factors Contributing to Poor Household Food Consumption Patterns
The condition of the food security of poor households in the Kelurahan Kelurahan can be explained through various factors. First, economic limitations are the main causes that result in their low ability to access nutritious food. Inadequate income often forces households to choose cheaper food, which is generally low quality.
Second, education and knowledge of nutrition also play an important role. Many poor households may not have enough understanding of the importance of variation and balance in their diet. Without adequate knowledge, they tend not to be aware of the negative impact of unbalanced food consumption.
