Introduction

In the realm of agriculture, technical efficiency plays a crucial role in increasing productivity and achieving optimal output. The development of organic agriculture in Perbaungan District, Serdang Bedagai Regency, has been a topic of interest in recent years. Despite the potential for high productivity, the average rice production in the area has been below par, reaching only 5.86 tons per hectare in 2018. This is a far cry from the potential productivity of 8-10 tons per hectare using superior varieties. The limitations in understanding and use of agricultural inputs have been a major hindrance to farmers in the area.

In this increasingly challenging context of agriculture, it is essential to explore the factors that affect organic rice production, analyze the level of farm efficiency, and examine the factors that affect these efficiency. This study aims to provide insights into the technical efficiency of organic rice production in Perbaungan District, Serdang Bedagai Regency, and identify the factors that influence it.

Methodology

This study was conducted by Indra Cahyadi under the guidance of Iskandarini and Rahmanta. The study involved 33 farmers and analyzed data for one planting season. The purposive sampling method was used to select the farmers, ensuring that the sample was representative of the population.

Main Findings

The results of the analysis using the production function of the Cobb-Douglas Stochastic Frontier show that the variable area of land, seeds, and labor has a significant effect on organic rice production. This emphasizes that these three factors are the key to increasing agricultural output.

Furthermore, technical efficiency obtained an average of 0.84 shows that farmers still have the potential to improve their efficiency. In this context, the factors that influence the level of technical efficiency include the position in the farmer group and the number of training followed by farmers.

Analysis of Affect Factors

Position in Farmers Group

The position of a farmer in a farmer group can have a major effect on their access to information and resources. Farmers who have a better position often get more opportunities to learn from good experience and practice from other members. This can lead to improved technical efficiency, as they are able to adopt more efficient agricultural techniques.

Number of Training

Training provides the knowledge needed for farmers to understand more efficient agricultural techniques. Inadequate knowledge is one of the main obstacles in optimizing the use of input. Therefore, the increase in training can contribute significantly in increasing technical efficiency.

Conclusion

The potential for the development of organic agriculture in Perbaungan District, Serdang Bedagai Regency is very large. Although farmers face various obstacles, such as the use of inputs that have not been optimal, by improving education, training, and collaboration in farmer groups, it is expected that the level of production efficiency can increase. This will not only be beneficial for farmers in increasing their income but also contributes to food security and agricultural sustainability in the area.

Through the right strategic steps and support, Serdang Bedagai Regency has the potential to become one of the successful organic farming centers in Indonesia. The findings of this study highlight the importance of technical efficiency in organic rice production and provide insights into the factors that influence it.

Recommendations

Based on the findings of this study, the following recommendations are made:

  • Improve education and training for farmers to enhance their knowledge and skills in organic rice production.
  • Enhance collaboration among farmers through farmer groups to share knowledge and resources.
  • Provide support to farmers in accessing inputs and resources to optimize their use.
  • Develop and implement policies and programs to promote organic agriculture in Perbaungan District, Serdang Bedagai Regency.

By implementing these recommendations, it is expected that the level of technical efficiency in organic rice production can increase, leading to improved productivity and income for farmers in the area.

Limitations of the Study

This study has several limitations that should be noted. Firstly, the study was conducted in a specific region, Perbaungan District, Serdang Bedagai Regency, and may not be generalizable to other areas. Secondly, the study was limited to a single planting season, and the results may not be representative of other seasons. Finally, the study relied on secondary data, which may not be accurate or up-to-date.

Future Research Directions

Future research should aim to build on the findings of this study and explore the following research directions:

  • Conduct a more comprehensive study that covers a larger area and multiple seasons.
  • Investigate the impact of other factors, such as climate change and market fluctuations, on organic rice production.
  • Develop and implement policies and programs to promote organic agriculture in Perbaungan District, Serdang Bedagai Regency.

By addressing these research directions, it is expected that a more comprehensive understanding of the technical efficiency of organic rice production can be achieved, leading to improved productivity and income for farmers in the area.
