Analysis of Knowledge and Environmental Sanitation Conditions and PHBS in SMPN 1 Pantai Cermin, Serdang Bedagai Regency in 2023

Introduction

Understanding the Importance of School Environmental Sanitation

School environmental sanitation is a critical aspect of maintaining a healthy and safe learning environment for students. Poor school environment conditions can increase the risk of spreading diseases, which can have a significant impact on students' physical and mental well-being. Therefore, it is essential to examine the condition of the school environment and create clean and healthy life behavior (PHBS) among students. This study aims to analyze the conditions of school environmental sanitation, student knowledge about environmental sanitation, clean and healthy life behavior, and complaints of student health at SMPN 1 Pantai Cermin, Serdang Bedagai Regency in 2023.

Methodology

Research Design and Population

This study employed a descriptive research design with an observational approach. The population involved all students of SMPN 1 Pantai Cermin, while the samples used consisted of students in class VII, VIII, and IX, totaling 90 students. Sampling was carried out by proportional stratified random sampling method. The data obtained were then analyzed descriptively and presented in the form of tables and narratives.

Results

Demographic Characteristics of Students

The results showed that most students were aged 13 years, with 34 students (37.8%), and the majority of students were women, namely 52 students (57.8%). These demographic characteristics are essential in understanding the students' perspective and needs regarding environmental sanitation and PHBS.

Environmental Sanitation Conditions

Environmental sanitation conditions in SMPN 1 Pantai Cermin have fulfilled the requirements set in accordance with the Decree of the Minister of Health of the Republic of Indonesia No.1429/Menkes/SK/XII/2006 concerning Guidelines for the Implementation of School Environmental Health with a score of 74.6%. This indicates that the school has made significant efforts to improve its environmental sanitation conditions.

Student Knowledge Levels Regarding Environmental Sanitation

Student knowledge levels regarding environmental sanitation are in the good category (66.7%), sufficient categories (28.9%), and less categories (4.4%). This suggests that students have a good understanding of environmental sanitation, but there is still room for improvement.

Level of Application of PHBS

The level of application of PHBS is also classified as good (65.6%) and sufficient (34.4%). This indicates that students are actively involved in maintaining their own health and practicing clean and healthy life behavior.

Health Complaints

However, in the case of health complaints, it was found that the most common health complaints were respiratory complaints (44.4%), followed by digestive health complaints (26.7%), and skin health complaints that were the least experienced by students (22.2%). This suggests that students are still experiencing various health complaints, which may be related to the school environment and PHBS.

Discussion

Implications of the Findings

Based on these findings, it is advisable to the school to improve the condition of environmental sanitation that still does not meet the health requirements of the school environment. In addition, it is also important to provide insight to students about the application of PHBS, so that they are better understanding and actively involved in maintaining their own health.

Recommendations

Efforts to improve environmental sanitation conditions and knowledge about PHBS need to be done so that students can avoid various health complaints. By applying clean and healthy life behavior, students are expected to grow in a healthy environment and support their development optimally.

Conclusion

Analysis of Sanitation Conditions and Students' Knowledge

Analysis of sanitation conditions and students' knowledge about the environment in SMPN 1 Pantai Cermin shows that although there are many positive aspects, there are still room for improvement. Efforts to improve environmental sanitation conditions and knowledge about PHBS need to be done so that students can avoid various health complaints. By applying clean and healthy life behavior, students are expected to grow in a healthy environment and support their development optimally.

Limitations of the Study

Future Research Directions

This study has several limitations, including the small sample size and the limited scope of the study. Future research should aim to investigate the relationship between environmental sanitation conditions and PHBS on students' health outcomes. Additionally, studies should be conducted to explore the effectiveness of interventions aimed at improving environmental sanitation conditions and knowledge about PHBS.
