Analysis of Factors Influencing Farmers' Decisions in Conducting Local Rice Farming in Tanjung Raja Village, STM Hulu District, Deli Serdang Regency
Introduction
Local rice farming is a vital sector in many rural communities, providing a source of income and food for millions of people worldwide. In Tanjung Raja Village, STM Hulu District, Deli Serdang Regency, local rice farming is a significant contributor to the local economy. However, the success of local rice farming depends on various factors, including farmers' decisions, which are influenced by a range of personal, social, and economic factors. This study aims to analyze the factors that influence farmers' decisions in conducting local rice farming in Tanjung Raja Village, STM Hulu District, Deli Serdang Regency.
Methodology
This study was conducted using a purposive sampling method, where 57 farmers were selected based on their involvement in local rice farming. The sampling method used was simple random sampling, ensuring that every farmer had an equal opportunity to participate. The analysis method applied was Chi-Square analysis to determine the relationship between various factors and farmers' decisions.
Results
The results of this study showed that several factors significantly influence farmers' decisions in carrying out local rice farming. Among these factors, the age of farmers, motivation in farming, and farming experience were found to be the most influential. These three factors have a strong relationship with the decisions taken by farmers. This suggests that older farmers tend to have more knowledge and experience in the field of agriculture, as well as high motivation to continue to run local rice farming.
On the other hand, other factors such as education, the proximity of farmers to farmer groups, the intensity of involvement in traditional activities, the number of family dependents, land ownership, land area, and farmers' income did not show a significant effect on farmers' decisions in carrying out local rice farming. This may be caused by the nature of local agriculture, which depends more on the factors of experience and personal motivation rather than formal education or other social aspects.
Discussion
The findings of this study have several implications for policymakers and agricultural institutions. Firstly, it highlights the importance of considering the factors that influence farmers' motivation and experience when developing policies and programs aimed at improving agricultural output. Training and counseling programs that aim to increase the knowledge and skills of farmers in local rice farming can be a strategic step to improve agricultural output.
Secondly, the study suggests that encouraging the formation of a solid farmer community can provide important social support for farmers to survive and develop in their farming. This can be achieved through the establishment of farmer groups, which can provide a platform for farmers to share knowledge, resources, and experiences.
Conclusion
In conclusion, this study provides a deeper understanding of the dynamics that occur in farmers' decisions, which can inform the development of more targeted and effective policies to improve the welfare of farmers, especially in the development of local rice farming in the area. The findings of this study highlight the importance of considering the factors that influence farmers' motivation and experience when developing policies and programs aimed at improving agricultural output.
