Analysis of Employee Awareness Levels to the Application of K3 in the Production Area in a Wood Processing Plant
Introduction
In the production area of a wood processing plant, the application of K3 (Keselamatan dan Kesehatan Kerja or Occupational Safety and Health) is crucial to ensure a safe and healthy work environment. However, the level of employee awareness of K3 in such plants is often a concern. This study aims to analyze the level of employee awareness of the application of K3 in the production area of PT Bukit Intan Abadi, a wood processing plant in Indonesia.
Background
PT Bukit Intan Abadi is a factory engaged in wood processing, producing two types of products: wooden sheets and plywood. The production process of these two products is divided into two areas: the Finger Joint Laminating Board (FJLB) and the Plywood production area. Despite the importance of K3, the factory recorded 54 cases of work accidents during the 2019-2022 period. These cases were mainly caused by human factors such as non-compliance with the use of personal protective equipment (PPE), work not in accordance with standard operational procedures (SOP), and lack of knowledge about occupational health and safety (K3).
Methodology
This study uses a descriptive approach with quantitative methods, where data is presented in the form of numerical recapitulation from the results of a closed questionnaire. The questionnaire was distributed to all employees in the production area, and the results were analyzed to determine the level of employee awareness of K3.
Results
The results of the study showed that the level of employee awareness of the application of K3 was still low, with a percentage of only 32%. In particular, in terms of human factors, employee awareness to comply with the use of PPE is very low, reaching 95%. Work procedures according to SOP have a moderate level of awareness at 34%, while K3-related knowledge is also classified as moderate with a percentage of 39%.
On the other hand, from environmental factors, the level of awareness reaches 53%, although noise problems in the workplace are still low, which is 40%. Provision of OSH training shows more positive results with a percentage of 70%, while the availability of health facilities is declared moderate at 39%.
Employee Awareness Analysis of K3
The level of employee awareness of K3 at PT Bukit Intan Abadi shows several critical issues. First, the low awareness of the use of PPE is very worrying, given that PPE is the first defense line for employees in dealing with the risk of accidents in the work environment. Non-compliance in using PPE can be caused by a lack of understanding of the importance of self-protection, or maybe because employees feel comfortable without using it.
Second, although there is moderation in awareness about SOPs and K3 knowledge, these numbers still show that many employees do not fully understand or follow the procedures that have been set. This shows the need for more intensive and effective training and socialization so that employees understand the consequences of non-compliance with SOP.
Third, although the noise level is identified as a problem, better K3 training and the provision of health facilities can help improve safety in the workplace. Employees need to feel the real benefits of the training, so that the motivation to comply with K3 standards can be increased.
Conclusion
Overall, the results of this analysis provide a clear picture of the level of employee awareness of the application of K3 at PT Bukit Intan Abadi. With the increase in awareness of the importance of K3, it is expected that the number of work accidents can be reduced significantly. Therefore, the factory management needs to strengthen the K3 training program, facilitate the provision of adequate PPE, and create a safer and more supportive work environment. This is not only for the benefit of employees, but also for the productivity and sustainability of the company in the future.
Recommendations
Based on the results of this study, the following recommendations are made:
- Strengthen the K3 training program: The factory management should provide more intensive and effective training and socialization to employees to increase their awareness of K3.
- Facilitate the provision of adequate PPE: The factory management should ensure that employees have access to adequate PPE to prevent accidents and injuries.
- Create a safer and more supportive work environment: The factory management should create a work environment that is safe and supportive for employees, with adequate health facilities and a noise-free environment.
- Monitor and evaluate the effectiveness of K3: The factory management should regularly monitor and evaluate the effectiveness of K3 in the production area to identify areas for improvement.
By implementing these recommendations, the factory management can improve the level of employee awareness of K3 and reduce the number of work accidents in the production area.
