Analysis of Arabica Coffee Farming Revenue and the Factors Affecting It

In recent years, the coffee plantation area in Karo Regency has shown a significant increase trend, reflecting the greater interest of farmers to develop coffee farming. This research was conducted in Suka Village, Tigapanah District, Karo, using the Purposive method to understand more about the income of Arabica coffee farming and the factors that influence the income. The main purpose of this study is to analyze the annual income of Arabica coffee farming and identify the factors that play a role in influencing that income.

Background of Arabica Coffee Farming

Arabica coffee is one of the most popular coffee species in the world, known for its distinct flavor and aroma. It is grown in various regions, including the Karo Regency in Indonesia, where this study was conducted. The region's climate and soil conditions are suitable for coffee production, making it an attractive area for coffee farming. However, the success of coffee farming depends on various factors, including production, land area, coffee prices, farmer experience, and labor utilization.

Methodology

The analysis method applied in this study includes descriptive analysis and multiple linear regression. Descriptive analysis was used to describe the characteristics of the data, while multiple linear regression was used to identify the factors that influence the income of Arabica coffee farming. The study was conducted in Suka Village, Tigapanah District, Karo, where 30 farmers were selected as the sample population. The data was collected through a survey, which included questions about the farmers' production, land area, coffee prices, farmer experience, and labor utilization.

Results

The results of the study showed that Arabica coffee farming was classified as a profitable business, with a total revenue of Rp. 17,101,713 per farmer per year and Rp. 29,485,712 per hectare per year. The study also identified several factors that significantly influence the income of Arabica coffee farming in the area. These factors include:

1. Production

The amount of coffee produced per hectare greatly affects the total income. Farmers who are able to increase yields will feel greater benefits. The study found that farmers who produced more coffee per hectare had higher income. This is because the higher production leads to higher revenue.

2. Land Area

Land area managed by farmers also affects total income. The wider the land planted with coffee, the greater the income potential earned. The study found that farmers who had more land planted with coffee had higher income. This is because the wider land area allows for more production, leading to higher revenue.

3. Coffee Prices

The selling price of Arabica coffee on the market is very influential on farmers' income. Fluctuations in coffee prices can have a direct impact on the profitability of their farm businesses. The study found that farmers who sold their coffee at higher prices had higher income. This is because the higher selling price leads to higher revenue.

4. Farmer Experience

Older farmers usually have more experience and skills in farming. The study found that experienced farmers had higher income. This is because the experience and skills gained over time allow farmers to manage their farms more efficiently, leading to higher production and revenue.

5. Farming Experience

Experience farming contributes to the techniques and methods applied in garden management, which in turn affects the results of production. The study found that farmers with more experience in farming had higher income. This is because the experience gained over time allows farmers to apply more efficient techniques and methods, leading to higher production and revenue.

6. Labor Outpouring

The level of labor used in the coffee farming process also affects income. The efficient use of labor can increase yields. The study found that farmers who used labor more efficiently had higher income. This is because the efficient use of labor leads to higher production, leading to higher revenue.

Conclusion

Overall, the results of the analysis show that Arabica coffee farming in Suka Village, Tigapanah District, is not only beneficial but also influenced by various factors that must be considered by farmers. Increasing focus on these factors, such as production, land management, and labor utilization, can help increase income and sustainability of coffee farming in this region. This research is important to provide insight for farmers and stakeholders in developing agricultural strategies that are more effective and efficient.

Recommendations

Based on the findings of this study, the following recommendations are made:

  • Farmers should focus on increasing production by using more efficient techniques and methods.
  • Farmers should expand their land area to increase production and revenue.
  • Farmers should sell their coffee at higher prices to increase revenue.
  • Farmers should gain more experience in farming to apply more efficient techniques and methods.
  • Farmers should use labor more efficiently to increase production and revenue.

Limitations

This study has several limitations. Firstly, the study was conducted in a specific region, which may not be representative of other regions. Secondly, the study only focused on Arabica coffee farming, which may not be applicable to other types of coffee farming. Finally, the study only analyzed the factors that influence income, which may not be the only factors that affect coffee farming.

Future Research

Future research should focus on exploring other factors that affect coffee farming, such as climate change, soil quality, and market demand. Additionally, future research should focus on developing more effective and efficient agricultural strategies that can be applied in various regions.
